‘Battlestar Galactica’ Reboot No Longer in the Works at Peacock (EXCLUSIVE)

As a die-hard fan of the original “Battlestar Galactica” series, I must admit my heart skipped a beat upon hearing the news that the reboot is no longer in development at Peacock. Having grown up with the epic space opera and its complex narrative, I’ve eagerly anticipated this new iteration to continue the saga of humanity’s fight for survival against the relentless Cylons.

It appears that the long-awaited revival of “Battlestar Galactica” will not be moving forward on Peacock, according to exclusive information obtained by us.

The project, initially unveiled in 2019 prior to Peacock’s debut, was originally slated among their initial lineup of original shows. Although it wasn’t officially commissioned for a series run, it has been in the works since then. Specific plot details have remained elusive, but the show is rumored to be set within the same universe as the 2003 “Battlestar Galactica” series.

Sam Esmail, through his company Esmail Corp., took on a personal endeavor known as the reboot, under an overall deal with studio UCP. Chad Hamilton, also of Esmail Corp., was involved as an executive producer. Michael Lesslie joined the project as the writer in 2020, but later departed in 2021. More recently, it’s been reported that Derek Simonds will be taking over as the writer, executive producer, and showrunner for the reboot, as of January this year.

Based on what I’ve been told, it seems the UCP plans to offer the project to other potential buyers or partners.

So far, Peacock has only aired a small number of science fiction series. However, the streaming service has had success with shows such as “Poker Face,” starring Natasha Lyonne (with season 2 in production), a prequel to Seth MacFarlane’s “Ted” films (also with season 2 on the way), and a live-action adaptation of the “Twisted Metal” games (preparing for another season). Upcoming shows on Peacock include “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist,” featuring an impressive cast that includes Kevin Hart, Samuel L. Jackson, Taraji P. Henson, and Don Cheadle.

The initial “Battlestar Galactica” series was developed by Glen A. Larson and showcased a cast consisting of Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict, Lorne Greene, and Maren Jensen. It debuted for a single season in 1978 on ABC, with a brief spin-off titled “Galactica 1980” that didn’t last long. The original series also sparked a collection of comic books, novels, and both board and video games.

In the year 2003, Ronald D. Moore and the Sci Fi Channel (now known as Syfy) reintroduced the show with a three-hour miniseries. This production featured Edward James Olmos, Mary McDonnell, and Katee Sackhoff among its cast members. The success of this initial venture prompted Syfy and Sky Television to order a full series, with the miniseries’ cast reprising their roles. This show was immensely successful, spanning over four seasons and giving birth to two television films before concluding in 2009. A spin-off series titled “Caprica” premiered on Syfy in 2010, but only ran for one season.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’d say it goes like this: “In ‘Battlestar Galactica,’ I find myself caught up in an epic struggle between humanity and a race of intelligent robots – the Cylons. These mechanical beings have left a trail of destruction among our distant star system colonies, wiping out much of our population. Now, a ragtag fleet, consisting of civilian ships and the mighty Battlestar, are on a quest to locate our mythical ancestral home – Earth.”
