As an admirer of the illustrious and versatile Jamie Lee Curtis, it is simply mesmerizing to witness her unique blend of wit, charm, and unapologetic candor. Her life experiences have not only graced our screens with iconic performances but also imbued her with a profound understanding of the film industry’s intricacies.
At this year’s Comic-Con, Jamie Lee Curtis was among those who took part in a rapid-fire question session with MTV. When asked about the phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe we’re currently experiencing, Curtis playfully replied “Bad,” which caused her and her fellow “Borderlands” co-stars to share a laugh. Mackenzie Davis, from the show “Speak No Evil”, replied with “death” when asked about a Marvel ‘phase’. Davis confessed that she wasn’t familiar with this concept. In response to her answer, James McAvoy, who has played Charles Xavier in several ‘X-Men’ films but hasn’t been part of the MCU, joked: “Marvel, you’ve just been exterminated by her.”
As Curtis jokingly made a point, it wasn’t entirely off base. Despite Marvel’s current box office triumph with “Deadpool & Wolverine” poised to surpass $1 billion globally next month, this success comes after a challenging year for the studio. In 2023, Marvel faced two disappointing box office performances with “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “The Marvels,” a title that set a new low for MCU earnings, marking the studio’s least successful movie to date.
Throughout 2022, Curtis engaged in a lighthearted competition with Marvel, following the release of her critically acclaimed A24 film “Everything Everywhere All at Once” which coincided with the premiere of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” from the MCU. During this period, she took to social media to express her belief that her movie was the better multiverse project.
Curtis clarified to People magazine, “I don’t hold any grudges against Marvel as a whole. I’ve enjoyed watching many Marvel movies. What I meant when discussing the so-called feud was that ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ was a smaller film with great potential, and we managed to create a multiverse story that resonated deeply with audiences. I was trying to convey that not every movie needs to be a Marvel production in order to captivate an audience and evoke strong emotions.”
It’s true that Curtis hinted at creating a bit of healthy rivalry between the two multiverse films. But what about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe? She doesn’t reject the idea outright, but she feels it’s unlikely she’d get an offer.
“Curtis admitted he doesn’t expect a call from Marvel since he caused some controversy. However, as a collaborative artist who works on various projects, if an intriguing role presented itself where he could offer his unique talents, naturally, he would be open to working with Marvel. After all, why turn down the opportunity?”
As someone who has been a fan of Marvel comics for decades, I can’t help but feel a sense of disappointment when considering the prospect of a Marvel movie featuring a 64-year-old woman. With my years of watching superhero movies and observing the industry’s tendency to lean towards youthful, action-packed stories, it seems unlikely that they would be able to find an engaging and meaningful way to incorporate an older female character into their universe. The idea of being cast in a Marvel movie fills me with trepidation, as I imagine myself covered in dots and forced to perform solo scenes in a drab warehouse setting. While I remain hopeful that Marvel can surprise us all with fresh and innovative storytelling, my past experiences have led me to question their ability to do so with this particular scenario.
