As a lifelong gaming enthusiast and someone who has seen the industry evolve over the decades, I find myself both concerned and amused by the current situation unfolding between video game voice actors and major gaming entities. On one hand, it’s heartening to see these talented individuals standing up for their rights and demanding fair compensation and protections, especially in an industry where they play such a crucial role in bringing our beloved characters to life.
Recently, voice actors for video games decided to initiate a strike following a prolonged period of discussion spanning nearly a year and a half with prominent gaming corporations. The head of one of these companies involved in the negotiations, Electronic Arts (EA), has expressed that he doesn’t anticipate the strike will significantly affect their business operations in the immediate future.
During a recent earnings discussion, EA CEO Andrew Wilson was inquired about possible effects from the ongoing strike. Given the unique nature of the strike and EA’s operational structure, he expressed confidence that the strike won’t lead to any significant disruptions in the immediate term. (IGN reports this information.)
Wilson pointed out that our collaboration is extremely tight; this predicament isn’t exclusive to EA, it’s a matter affecting the entire industry. He emphasized that we’re putting in a lot of effort to reach a resolution in our negotiations, and he underlined the significant role voice actors play within EA’s operations, acknowledging their importance and appreciation.
Wilson clarified that starting from games produced after September 2023, our strike will apply. This means that the games currently in production and the ongoing live services won’t be affected in the short term.
Games starting production past September 2023, under typical AAA development timelines, will probably be quite a while before they hit the shelves. Consequently, the upcoming strike might not significantly affect release schedules for games in the immediate future. It’s important to note that live-service games already launched, such as Fortnite and Destiny 2, are excluded from this, allowing them to continue receiving new content as normal.
Wilson emphasized that we will persist in negotiating honestly, and we’re optimistic that we can swiftly settle our disputes during these negotiations. However, we don’t expect any substantial immediate effects on EA in the near future.
Last September, video game voice actors decided to go on strike after failing to reach an agreement with game companies through SAG-AFTRA. However, they only started taking action as of July 26. The main issue causing this impasse has been AI technology, which the union believes needs fair protections for voice actors. In response, the game industry has expressed disappointment about the strike decision.
