On July 1, the second season of “Star Trek: Prodigy” premiered on Netflix, and the show’s lead actress, Kate Mulgrew, remains optimistic that the animated series could potentially return for a third season.
Following her talk at the “Prodigy” discussion during San Diego Comic-Con, Mulgrew described the atmosphere in the panel’s hall as buzzing with excitement.
“She announced that the panel she hosted on Sunday morning was packed. Everyone seemed ecstatic and overjoyed. They can’t get enough of this kind of programming. In my opinion, there isn’t anything similar on TV right now because it’s introducing ‘Star Trek’ to a new group of kids in an innovative manner.”
Originally, “Prodigy” debuted on Nickelodeon and Paramount+ during its first season. Soon after, it was swiftly renewed for another season. However, following broader corporate chaos, Paramount decided to terminate the series, removing Season 1 from their streaming service, despite the fact that production for Season 2 had already begun. Eventually, CBS Studios reached an agreement with Netflix to broadcast both seasons instead.
As a devoted fan of “Star Trek,” I’ve been thoroughly impressed with the positive response this new show has garnered from our community. The Hageman brothers, Kevin and Dan, are doing an exceptional job in crafting intricate narratives that resonate with everyone. They don’t talk down to anyone; instead, they raise the bar for all viewers, just as if they were elevating a five-year-old to new heights of understanding. That’s something I truly appreciate about their work.
Mulgrew playfully noted that someone had pointed out that Season 2 of “Prodigy” functions as an unofficial eight season for “Star Trek: Voyager,” largely because of her character and the presence of “Voyager” cast members like Robert Beltran (Chakotay) and Robert Picardo (The Doctor).
Discussing the overall situation of “Star Trek,” Mulgrew commended the forward-thinking management led by Alex Kurtzman, expressing her belief that the franchise has endless potential for new shows.
“She stated that there’s always room for more of this particular level of kindness and enthusiasm, as it never reaches a peak. The essence of her words is commendable and carries great significance. It embodies our highest ideals, representing the pinnacle of who we strive to be.”
“Though it might appear overly optimistic, given the stunning craftsmanship of ‘Prodigy’ and similar productions, it’s actually far from idealistic. Instead, it serves as a reflection of how we ought to conduct ourselves in our world.”
