As a long-time fan of Ty Burrell‘s work, I was looking forward to seeing him return to ABC with the comedy pilot “Forgive and Forget.” Burrell has a unique ability to bring humor and heart to every role he plays, particularly in his iconic portrayal of Phil Dunphy on “Modern Family.” His Emmy wins and nominations are a testament to his exceptional talent.
Ty Burrell will not be returning to ABC just yet.
I’ve just found out that the comedy pilot “Forgive and Forget,” where Burrell starred and took on an executive producer role, won’t be progressing at the broadcast network.
Initially planned for a trial run at ABC in March, the multi-camera production primarily focused on Burrell’s character. No additional cast members were revealed at that time. The official description of the show portrays it as chronicling the life of Hank (Burrell), a man known for his lively social circle. Following an unanticipated medical diagnosis, Hank seeks to rekindle relationships with his grown son Ben, aiming to create new memories together.
Eugene Garcia-Cross acted as both writer and executive producer for the pilot episode, which was overseen by Robin Shorr as showrunner and executive producer. Burrell also served as an executive producer under Desert Whale Productions. The production company responsible was 20th Television.
Without a doubt, Burrell gained widespread recognition for portraying Phil Dunphy in ABC’s popular sitcom “Modern Family” across an impressive span of 11 seasons and 250 episodes. He received Emmy Awards for his supporting comedy role in 2011 and 2014, and was nominated a total of eight times in that category.
Had “Forgive and Forget” gone to series, Burrell would have been the second former ABC star returning in a new multi-cam comedy. ABC previously announced that the Tim Allen-led series “Shifting Gears” has been greenlit. Allen stars in that series alongside “2 Broke Girls” alum Kat Dennings.
Currently, ABC has a limited number of scripted comedies in production. The popular single-camera show “Abbott Elementary” will return for its fourth season on October 9, while the seventh and last season of “The Conners” is predicted to premiere during the midseason.
