Wesley Snipes Thought Blade Return in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Wouldn’t Make Sense With MCU’s Reboot on the Way; He Originally Moved on After Talks for Fourth Movie Died

As a long-time fan of Wesley Snipes and his iconic role as Blade, I was absolutely thrilled to see him reprise the character in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” It has been 20 years since we last saw Blade on the big screen, and I must admit that I had given up hope of ever seeing him again. But then came the surprise text from Ryan Reynolds himself, asking if Wesley would be interested in returning to the role.

⚠️ Attention, here comes a hint: The tale you’re about to read includes plot reveals for the ongoing movie “Deadpool & Wolverine,” currently showing in cinemas!

Wesley Snipes shared his experiences with Entertainment Weekly about playing Blade again in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” He made a surprising appearance at San Diego Comic-Con last week, joining other cameo actors after a screening of the Marvel hit.

For quite some time, our discussions have been intriguing, some deeply meaningful and others less so, Snipes shared with EW regarding his return for another Blade film. “I had almost let go of the idea,” he said, “having done three of them already, I considered it complete. They turned out well, not bad at all… So, I shifted my focus to new projects and ones that could potentially be even more successful.”

In the 1998 film named “Blade,” Wesley Snipes first appeared as the title character, and later returned to play Blade in “Blade II” (2002) under Guillermo del Toro’s direction, and in “Blade: Trinity” (2004). During the production of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Ryan Reynolds reached out to Snipes via text message and proposed a discussion about potential involvement in reprising Blade. The message read simply, “I’d like to chat with you.”

Snipes expressed surprise at his return to Blade after a 20-year hiatus. “I honestly didn’t believe it could happen,” he admitted. He doubted the project would work out due to various reasons, including Marvel and Disney’s involvement given their casting of Mahershala Ali for the next installment, which seemed incongruous to him. However, when an unexpected call came from Ryan Reynolds after 20 years, he decided to listen. The idea was pitched to him, and with a positive response from the team, the project moved forward. “If I’m in, they’re in,” Snipes recalled, leading us to where we are now.

For nearly two years, Marvel Studios has been working on a fresh take of “Blade” with actor Ali attached to the lead role. However, the production has encountered several hurdles during development. On June 12th, news broke that director Yann Demange was leaving the project and that Eric Pearson (“The Fantastic Four,” “Black Widow”) would be joining as a new screenwriter. At that time, Wesley Snipes shared on his Twitter account: “Blade, oh boy! People are still seeking the secret recipe, riding snowmobiles in traffic, it’s quite rough. Daywalkers make it look effortless, don’t they?”

2019 saw Marvel confirm a “Blade” movie featuring Ali, with Bassam Tariq initially signed on as director in July. However, Tariq left the project in September 2022, just about two months before filming was due to start. Over the years, various screenwriters have been attached, including Stacy Osei-Kuffour from “Watchmen” and Michael Starrbury.

Last November, EbMaster shared that the script for “Blade” had been through at least five different writers. A source close to the script revisions revealed that the storyline shifted towards a female-led narrative with valuable lessons. At the time, it was rumored that Marvel was considering producing the film but with a budget under $100 million.

It’s uncertain if Ali’s Blade movie will be released, but its production didn’t affect Snipes reprising his role as “Deadpool & Wolverine” character.

“I wasn’t quite up to the mark for Blade yet. I don’t live my life as that character daily, you understand. For the new film, I had to get back into shape and prepare for the action scenes. The specifics were kept secret from me, so I trained extensively. Fortunately, I didn’t need to exert myself as much as I anticipated since action movies are physically demanding. Around a month into production, I reached my goal, and with some strategic padding, I was ready to roll.”

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is now playing in theaters nationwide.
