Robert Downey Jr. Nearly Played Doctor Doom Over A Decade Ago

As a long-time fan of Robert Downey Jr.’s acting prowess and Marvel’s cinematic universe, I am beyond excited to see him return to the franchise in the role of Doctor Doom. The idea that he was originally considered for this iconic villain role before Iron Man even came to fruition only adds to my anticipation.

Robert Downey Jr., who previously brought Iron Man to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is now set to appear as the sinister Doctor Doom. This isn’t a new development; he was an early contender for the part before Iron Man began production.

Approximately a year and a half ago, Marvel Studios shared promotional content to mark the 15th anniversary of the first Iron Man film. During this release, director Jon Favreau mentioned in an interview with producer Kevin Feige that they had previously met with Julian McMahon for another project, possibly related to Doctor Doom. Feige acknowledged this recollection with a nod of confirmation. Prior to Iron Man, McMahon portrayed Doctor Doom in the initial two Fantastic Four films.

Robert Downey Jr. received an Oscar, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA award for his acting role as Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer. At Comic-Con in San Diego, Marvel unveiled the titles of the upcoming Avengers movies: “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars.” The Russo brothers, who previously directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, are set to helm the next two Avengers productions.
