As a seasoned Project Zomboid survivor with countless hours under my belt, I can’t help but be utterly enchanted by this handpicked selection of mods that breathe new life into my post-apocalyptic existence. Let me walk you through my top six must-haves, each one more enthralling than the last.
Project Zomboid is among my top favorite games, and while it’s impressive on its own, it truly shines when enhanced with mods. In this post, I’ll share the 25 must-try mods for an exceptional Project Zomboid experience.
Best Project Zomboid Mods
This list doesn’t come with a ranking, except for the last five, which I consider exceptional. It’s challenging to evaluate mods due to their vast differences. I won’t include cop-outs, such as a list of 15 KI5 vehicle collection entries. Instead, I will mention mod series and individual items when necessary. For framework mods, like number one, the ranking applies to the foundation itself, while additional features are for your selection.
#25 – Common Sense
As a long-time survivor in the Minecraft world, I can’t imagine playing without Common Sense mod. This seemingly basic addition enhances my gaming experience in ways that seem so natural and intuitive. With this mod, I no longer have to question if I can pry open a stuck door with a crowbar or open a can of food with a knife. The ability to craft sheets from wool is another feature that just makes sense to me.
#24 – Functional Appliances
I love root beer. I really do, and I also really love cinema popcorn. So what if you could have those things in Project Zomboid? Well, with the Functional Appliances mod, you can. Adding in a host of interactive appliances around the world like soda machines, hot dog rollers, industrial deep fryers, and many more. Nearly all of these can be moved around, too, meaning you too can live your dream of filling a modest suburban home with industrial kitchen equipment.
#23 – Just Throw Them Out The Window
This “Just Throw Them Out The Window” mod offers a basic yet essential gameplay feature that I strongly prefer. It enables players to dispose of the corpses of their undead attackers… by chucking them out the window. A valuable addition for maintaining a tidy base, particularly when living in an apartment complex.
#22 – Scrap Series
For extended gaming sessions, the “Scrap” modification collection is an excellent choice. These mods enable you to remain effective even when ammunition has been depleted, but only if you invest time in enhancing your metalworking proficiency. This set comprises three mods (as well as a foundation), which include melee weapons made from scrap, firearms with scrap bullets, and armor reinforced with scrap. All of these items have well-balanced crafting procedures and introduce new magazines for you to master.
#21 – Undead Survivor
In this mod for Undead Survivor, five unique outfits are introduced as an addition. However, finding these outfits comes with a challenge: they can only be obtained from particularly unfortunate undead individuals and have a low drop rate. These outfits boast impressive core statistics but also come with reasonable drawbacks to prevent them from becoming overpowered.
#20 – Ratpack
It’s a regular backpack, but it’s also a massive rat. I LOVE rats. No additional notes.
#19 – Soul Filcher Series
The Soul Filcher Series is packed with various offerings: new content, agricultural tips, edible recipes, and an entertaining multi-colored pen. Essentially, it’s a collection of enhancements that significantly improve the user experience, making them indispensable for me.
#18 – Working Treadmill
Among the abilities to improve in Project Zomboid, none pose a greater challenge than fitness, strength, and sprinting. These skills demand continuous focus and are initially hard to enhance due to your body deteriorating rapidly after minimal exertion. Consequently, they may seem not worth the investment. However, with the addition of a Working Treadmill, you can simultaneously develop these abilities and do so more extensively before your muscles tire excessively.
#17 – Yaki’s Hair Salon
At Yaki’s Hair Salon, they constantly introduce fresh and appealing hairstyles for you to enhance your look. Given my preference for the visual appeal over practicality, it’s hard for me to resist these new styles.
#16 – Lifestyle: Hobbies
At first sight, the “Lifestyle: Hobbies” may appear to focus solely on hobbies, but it actually offers an abundance of surprises beyond your imagination. This add-on enables you to learn various instruments, dance, and even practice meditation. However, that’s not all! You can also indulge in a plethora of other activities such as taking showers, bathing, sitting on furniture (an unexpected omission from the base game), and even sharing skills with friends if you’re playing multiplayer.
#15 – Clean Dirt
As a meticulous gamer and avid cleaner in my real life, I can’t help but bring that mentality into the world of Project Zomboid. With Clean Dirt mod, I now have the power to keep my virtual sanctuary spotless. No longer will those pesky buildups of dirt and grime go unchecked. This is a must-have addition for me, ensuring every corner of my base remains pristine and welcoming.
#14 – Tactical Weapons
If you prefer a more hands-on experience, Tactical Weapons is an excellent addition to the standard game arsenal. Although its weapons may not align perfectly with the game’s lore due to their modern feel, introducing a long sword for slaying zombies certainly adds an exciting element. Moreover, it introduces new craftable weapons such as the Halberd – a weapon that provides immense enjoyment during gameplay.
#13 – Bedford Falls
In the upcoming entries, every one of them represents an expansion of the map for my game, and each has become essential in my playlist. I’ve explored Muldraugh’s base map countless times, so it’s time for some fresh experiences to entice me back. The addition of Bedford Falls offers a new, expansive urban area close by, providing an intriguing opportunity for Urban Exploration before heading off towards Louisville.
#12 – Chestown
Chestown is also an urban focused map expansion, and far smaller than either Bedford Falls, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in quality. Chestown has far more attention to detail than Bedford Falls, and by far my favorite play through of Project Zomboid started here. My friends and I took refuge in one of the high rises in Chestown, and converted the entire top floor into our home. We survived for a good long while, too, until someone (not me) started a fire, and we burned to death in minutes. Fire escapes are important, folks.
#11 – Raven Creek
In comparison to other city expansions, Raven Creek stands out significantly with its immense size and diverse offerings. This bustling metropolis goes beyond the ordinary, featuring trailer parks, suburban neighborhoods, industrial zones, an abundance of high-rise buildings, and bustling commercial streets. Simply put, Raven Creek is an exceptional map expansion that delivers a rich and varied urban experience.
#10 – Expanded Helicopter Events
In my experience as a fan, Expanded Helicopter Events enriches the helicopter events in Fallout 76 in a significant way. To put it plainly, this mod builds upon the existing helicopter event system by introducing a multitude of new occurrences. Unlike the default game where you’d only encounter news or police helicopters occasionally (and that’s a one-time deal), this mod brings military flyovers. These flyovers serve as early warnings for upcoming martial law enforcement, FEMA aid drops, and even jets that can move hordes of enemies over vast areas. As the game progresses, you’ll encounter raiders in helicopters. This seemingly unassuming mod adds authenticity to a zombie apocalypse setting and keeps me engaged when I feel the gameplay could use some excitement.
#9 – KI5 Series
KI5 vehicles stand out as the top choice for modified vehicles due to their exceptional models, animations, balancing, and even customization options through the mechanics skill. The selection is vast, ranging from military trucks to a 1988 Volkswagen Jetta. Hidden gems, such as the Mystery Machine, add an element of surprise and delight after enduring harsh winter conditions.
#8 – Cheat Menu: Rebirth
For those moments when you require some additional assistance or wish to establish a specifically tailored beginning situation, Cheat Menu: Rebirth is an exceptional choice. The range of features in this mod is almost overwhelming to consider. Regardless of whether you’re playing solo or leading a small group, this mod is indispensable.
#7 – ZuperCart
I was taken aback to discover that ZuperCart is such an intuitive and uncomplicated solution, given that it’s just a modification. It equips you with shopping carts and trolleys, allowing you to effortlessly carry a large number of items without putting undue strain on your back. A necessary addition and of high quality.
#6 – Sapph’s Cooking
In Sapph’s Cooking, you’ll find over 500 fresh recipe additions, not just dishes but also new ingredients numbering at 500. Plus, there are 40 novel drink options and even 10 new weapon designs. This game is remarkable and offers an abundance of new elements for chef characters like myself, breaking the monotony of repetitive stir-fry meals. Instead, we can now explore techniques for cheese preparations, Black Forest cake creations, and taco making.
#5 – Building Menu
As a long-time fan of The Forest, I can’t help but feel excited about the upcoming update to the Building Menu. You see, I’ve spent countless hours in this game, scavenging for resources and constructing makeshift shelters to survive the zombie apocalypse. But let me tell you, the building system has always been a major pain point for me. The UI was clunky and unintuitive, making it a frustrating experience to build even the simplest structures.
#4 – Draw on the Map
As a dedicated player of Project Zomboid for years now, I’ve grown accustomed to the thrill of survival in this post-apocalyptic world. But recently, I stumbled upon an unexpected feature that has added a whole new dimension to my gaming experience: “Look, Draw on the Map.”
#3 – Brita’s Series
The collection from Brita consists of just two major expansions, yet their size is impressive. In Brita’s Arsenal, you’ll discover an enormous variety of new weapons and military equipment. This includes custom animations, innovative systems like grenade launchers, and even playful additions such as emplacement machine guns. However, keep in mind that there may be issues with scaling, so it’s essential to search for patches before installing. For a more immersive experience, consider disabling any post-1993 weapons in Brita’s Weapon Pack.
#2 – Dynamic Traits
The “Dynamic Traits” mod is an uncomplicated yet valuable addition to the game that you might expect to be included by default. This modification allows you to acquire and relinquish traits based on your choices during a playthrough. For instance, if you initially possess the ‘Smoker’ trait but decide to quit this habit, with persistence, you will eventually shed this attribute.
Over prolonged periods, you may acquire strong characteristics such as ‘Desensitized,’ which shields you from fear when encountering Zombies. It also adjusts the fundamental traits, weakening overly potent ones and enhancing less robust ones.
In summary, this exceptional mod is a must-have for any gaming experience, as it promotes positive actions.
#1 – True Music
From my perspective as an avid fan, there’s nothing debatable about it: if I could only keep one mod indefinitely, it would be True Music. This remarkable framework lets me bring cassettes and vinyls of any imaginable music into my game. Feeling like cruising around in my ’88 Volkswagen Jetta with “Hold the Line” by Toto playing? Or perhaps you’d rather carry a boombox in one hand and a Colt in the other while strolling down Muldraugh’s main road? With True Music, these scenarios are now within reach. Keep in mind that since it is a framework, I would need to search for the specific mods adding the music I desire, but given the vast collection on the Workshop, finding what I want should not be a problem.
