The Xbox 360 Store Shuts Down For Good Today

As a long-time gamer who has been part of the Xbox community since the early days of the Xbox 360, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and melancholy as we approach the end of an era. The news that the Xbox 360 Marketplace would be closing, after nearly 19 years of operation, is bittersweet.

The Xbox 360 marketplace is now counting down its last hours before closing permanently. This means it will no longer be possible to purchase new Xbox 360 games or downloadable content (DLC) starting from today, after nearly 19 years of operation. Nevertheless, those who have previously bought such content can still access and play it.

Larry Hryb, commonly referred to as Major Nelson, expressed delight on X as he looked back at the countless marketplace deals and updates he had shared throughout the years. Approximately a year ago, Hryb parted ways with Xbox after having spent an impressive 22-year tenure with Microsoft, holding the position of senior director of corporate communications prior to his departure.

After nearly 19 years, it’s time to bid farewell to the Xbox 360 Marketplace. In just a few hours from now, this chapter will conclude. I’ve enjoyed facilitating countless marketplace transactions and updates throughout the years. Thank you for your enjoyment, fair play, and participation.

Starting from July 29, 2023, Microsoft has informed users that the Xbox 360 marketplace will officially shut down. This announcement was made in August 2023, providing customers with approximately eleven months of notice. Furthermore, take note that the Microsoft Movies and TV app will no longer be accessible on Xbox 360 consoles, implying that users will be unable to watch their media content on those devices after this date.

Microsoft has made it clear that any Xbox 360 (and original Xbox) games that are backward-compatible will remain accessible for purchase on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox.com. Notably, online multiplayer functionality for these games is determined by the individual decisions of publishers and developers, hence remaining unchanged despite the store closure.

Regarding Xbox, a major update featuring background personalization, console-based subscription administration, and mouse-and-keyboard support for cloud gaming was rolled out last month.
