REVIEW: “Oddity” (2024)

As a huge fan of horror movies, I must admit that 2024 has been an exceptional year for the genre. With July almost behind us, we’ve already seen a remarkable array of entries into every possible sub-genre. Among these standouts is “Oddity,” a chilling and atmospheric Irish horror film by writer-director Damian Mc Carthy. This movie not only builds genuine suspense but also keeps the audience guessing till the very end.

As a long-time horror movie enthusiast, I must admit that 2024 has left me utterly astonished. With July almost behind us, we’ve already witnessed a wealth of impressive entries spanning nearly every sub-genre in horror films. The diversity and richness of this year’s offerings have truly reinvigorated my passion for the genre.

“Oddity” is an intriguingly made independent film that brings a supernatural twist to a simple murder mystery. The story, penned by McCarthy, is both captivating and unsettling, exploring themes of human evil and paranormal vengeance. McCarthy’s direction is thoughtful and deliberate, incorporating elements of the horror genre while maintaining creative freedom from it. This clever blend of the familiar and unique sets “Oddity” apart from other films in its genre.

REVIEW: “Oddity” (2024)

In this rendition, the film is held together by a remarkable double act from Carolyn Bracken. She portrays Dani Timmis, married to psychiatrist Ted Timmis, played by Gwilym Lee. Lately, they have put money into an antiquated countryside residence that they are currently refurbishing. While Ted carries out his duties during the nighttime at a local asylum, Dani chooses to spend the weekend at their fresh acquisition, working on it and relishing in its charm.

Late one night, an unexpected visitor startles Dani – it’s Olin Boole (previously one of her husband’s patients, played by Tadhg Murphy). He shows up at her door in a panic, insisting that an intruder has broken into their home while Dani was momentarily distracted. Frightened and torn, Dani must make a crucial decision: should she trust the man knocking on her door or remain hidden inside until her husband returns? The repercussions of her choice are dire as she ends up being brutally killed.

About a year passed and we meet Dani’s unusual sister Darcy, portrayed by Bracken once more. Blind and eccentric, Darcy manages a quirky store filled with cursed items she swears by. Her supposed psychic abilities keep Ted at bay. Meanwhile, Ted has a new living arrangement with his coworker Yana, played by Caroline Menton. An unexpected visit from Darcy, insistent on spending the night, brings an uncomfortable situation to light.

REVIEW: “Oddity” (2024)

When Ted is away doing his nighttime job, Yana finds herself stuck at home with Darcy, who has become increasingly hostile. To add to the unease, Darcy gives them a present – an uncanny, lifelike wooden mannequin from her shop, complete with a terrifying frozen expression and five small holes drilled into its head. What’s the deal with the wooden figure? Is its pained face telling a chilling tale of suffering? Does it conceal something sinister? Or could it symbolize something entirely different?
