Deadpool & Wolverine Breaks Records, Hugh Jackman Celebrates By Recreating Wolverine Meme

As a hardcore gamer and avid Marvel fan, I can’t help but feel absolutely elated by the box office success of Deadpool & Wolverine! The record-breaking opening weekend numbers of $205 million in North America and $233.3 million from international markets, resulting in a global start of an astounding $438 million, leaves me speechless.

The sole Marvel movie release in 2024, featuring Deadpool and Wolverine, is a huge box office hit. Within its first weekend, it grossed an impressive $205 million in North America and $233.3 million from foreign markets, totaling to a global debut of $438 million.

The current R-rated film opening holds the record for having the largest box office debut, outpacing the previous title holder, Deadpool from 2016. This feat also makes it the biggest weekend earnings for any movie released in 2024, surpassing Inside Out 2’s $155 million.

Some of the other records for Deadpool & Wolverine include the 34th consecutive MCU movie to launch at No. 1 at the US box office; biggest opening weekend ever for July (beating The Lion King; $191.8 million); and biggest global opening weekend since Avatar: The Way of Water.

As a longtime movie enthusiast and industry observer, I’ve witnessed the remarkable growth and dominance of Disney and Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies at the box office. It’s truly astounding to think that 16 out of the top 20 biggest opening weekends domestically in film history belong to Disney titles, with MCU films accounting for an impressive 11 of those spots.

Reynolds and Jackman marked their financial achievements with amusing posts on social media. For instance, Jackman reposted the widely-loved Wolverine meme in a humorous way.

Reynolds posted on Instagram Stories, expressing his gratitude: “I find it difficult to take in all this, but heartfelt thanks to those who watched our film over the weekend. Incredible!”

“Wolverine and Deadpool top the global box office charts, thanks to all your support, VancityReynolds and ShawnLevyDirect, as well as Marv Studios!”
