RGG Studio Head Reveals Like A Dragon: Yakuza Series Differs "From The Original Story"

As a long-time gamer and follower of the Yakuza series, I’m beyond excited for the upcoming Like a Dragon: Yakuza adaptation on Amazon Prime Video. Having played every installment since the first game back in 2005, I can confidently say that this franchise holds a special place in my heart. The characters, the storylines, and the immersive worlds created by SEGA have always left me feeling engaged and entertained.

Last week at San Diego Comic-Con, Amazon and SEGA revealed the first trailer for their upcoming Amazon Prime Video series based on the Yakuza video game, titled “Like a Dragon.” This new adaptation is expected to hit Amazon Prime Video screens later in the year, following the recent successes of shows like Twisted Metal and Fallout.

According to SEGA, the makers of the Like a Dragon/Yakuza video game series, they plan to introduce the franchise’s most renowned characters onto television screens. In an interview with Masayoshi Yokoyama, head of RGG Studio and the show’s executive producer, topics such as the adaptation’s loyalty to the original game were explored.

As a longtime fan of the Yakuza video game franchise, I’m absolutely thrilled that Like a Dragon: Yakuza is making its way to television screens. Having grown up playing these games and immersing myself in their rich storylines and intricate worlds, I can only imagine how breathtaking it will be to see the characters and stories come to life on TV.

In past interviews, Yokoyama acknowledged that the hit gaming series had previously been turned into a movie. However, he expressed apprehension about adapting the games once more, sharing his concern that the new adaptation might merely be a copy of what had come before. Instead, his goal was to create a fresh experience for viewers, allowing them to discover “Like a Dragon” as if they were encountering it for the first time.

In the official trailer’s explanation, Like a Dragon: Yakuza is presented as portraying the lives of tough yet emotional gang members and residents of Kamurochō, an enormous entertainment district inspired by the real-life Kabukichō area of Shinjuku, Tokyo. The gameplay unfolds against this backdrop. Additionally, the creators plan to add some imaginative touches, showcasing contemporary Japanese settings and delving deeper into the captivating tales of complex characters like Kazuma Kiryu, which earlier installments did not fully explore.

As a longtime fan of the original manga and anime series, I have to admit that my initial reaction was surprise and even a little disappointment when I heard about the casting choices for the upcoming live-action adaptation. I had always pictured Kazuma Kiryu and Akira Nishikiyama in very specific ways based on their character designs and personalities in the source material.

Twenty years ago, we crafted Kazuma Kiryu as a flawless character, leaving no room for further development. It’s clear that the portrayal of these characters in the drama doesn’t align with their original counterparts from the video game.

Through this project, Kazuma Kiryu underwent a significant transformation. Simultaneously, Kento Kaku introduced a fresh portrayal of Akira Nishikiyama as their riveting performances are not to be missed.
