As a devoted cinephile who has spent countless hours immersed in intricately woven narratives, I find myself deeply drawn to the enigmatic world of “Silo,” Apple TV+’s thought-provoking sci-fi series. The complex layers hidden beneath its post-apocalyptic surface echo the intricate rules and unpredictability of England’s beloved national pastime, cricket.
Rebecca Ferguson, who stars in and produces Apple TV+’s “Silo,” finds the hidden complexities within the sci-fi show’s plot similar to the intricate regulations of cricket, England’s beloved game.
Ferguson expressed that every time we believe we’ve unraveled a puzzle, be it emotional or relational, there seems to be another obstacle or challenge waiting for us. He added that this is what makes these stories so intriguing – they never truly reach an end. And just when you think you have the story figured out, it disappears, much like the unpredictability of the cricket game.
Ferguson joined Steve Zahn, Common, showrunner Graham Yost, and executive producer Hugh Howey in a conversation about the second season of “Silo” at Google TV’s EbMaster Studio during the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con.
In a bleak, post-apocalyptic future on Earth, humans inhabit colossal subterranean shelters, or “silo,” to shield themselves from the poisonous debris polluting the surface above.
Joining “Silo” was an unusual experience for Zahn, the new cast member. While he had to quickly understand the intricately developed world created by showrunner Yost during Season 1, his character’s solitude in Season 2 limited his interactions mainly to Juliette Nichols, played by Ferguson.
“The world is vast and complex, filled with numerous individuals and constant activity. However, my character has spent decades living in isolation, interacting primarily with only one other person,” Zahn explained.
“He’s weird,” Ferguson interjected about Zahn’s character. “He’s scary and weird.”
In Season 2, there’s a rebellion that breaks out inside Silo 18, which is the responsibility of Robert Sims, portrayed by Common, to handle. Although he found it challenging, Common was thrilled to tackle this role and delve into the hidden doubts and fears that reside within Sims’ character.
“In ‘Silo’s’ second season, Sims encounters numerous events that might not be fully revealed yet. However, there are certainly unanswered questions regarding my portrayal of the rebellion. As someone involved in the government, it’s intriguing for me to explore the complexities of being part of those who built society and maintaining its illusions, or perhaps revealing some truth. It’s an engaging experience for me to embody this character.”
