With ‘Deadpool & Wolverine,’ the Marvel Cinematic Universe Becomes First Film Franchise to Cross $30 Billion at Global Box Office

As a longtime movie critic with a deep appreciation for the evolution of cinematic universes, I’ve witnessed countless franchises come and go. However, none have left as indelible a mark on both the industry and audiences as Marvel Studios’ Cinematic Universe. Having attended countless Comic-Cons and premieres, I’ve been fortunate enough to witness this juggernaut’s growth firsthand.

I’m thrilled to share that Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe has made history by surpassing $30 billion in global box office revenues – an unparalleled feat in film franchise history! This exciting milestone was recently announced during the studios’ Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, with Rob Delaney, a respected moderator and accomplished actor known for his roles as Deadpool and Wolverine, breaking the news to the enthusiastic crowd.

As a movie buff, I’m thrilled to share that the new “Deadpool & Wolverine” film has made box office history! On its opening day in North America alone, it raked in an impressive $96 million – a record-breaking number for an R-rated film and the sixth highest grossing opening day ever. With domestic earnings projected to reach between $195 million and $205 million by Sunday, and global revenue estimated at around $380 million to $400 million, this blockbuster is truly living up to the hype!

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is known for its impressive output, with a total of 34 movies released over the past 15 years. Marvel Studios has been a trailblazer in the film industry since the launch of “Iron Man” in 2008, producing box office sensations like “Avengers: Endgame” ($2.799 billion) and “Infinity War” ($2.05 billion), which are two of the highest-grossing films to date. Even movies that didn’t perform as well, such as “Eternals” ($402 million), “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” ($476 million), and “The Marvels” ($206 million), would be considered success stories for most studios. However, these movies had production budgets of $200 million or more, resulting in financial losses for Disney during their theatrical runs.

As a film enthusiast, I’ve been fascinated by the financial success of various movie franchises. And let me tell you, some of them are truly impressive! For instance, Sony’s “Spider-Man” franchise has raked in an astonishing $10.6 billion across ten films. The iconic “Star Wars” saga follows closely behind with $10.3 billion earned from eleven movies. The magical world of “Harry Potter” has brought in a impressive $9.6 billion over the course of eleven films as well. Lastly, the suave and sophisticated “James Bond” franchise has amassed an impressive $7.8 billion through twenty-five films. These franchises have set the bar high, but Marvel’s costumed heroes still reign supreme.

I had the pleasure of watching “Deadpool & Wolverine: Saving Mercurio,” directed by Shawn Levy. In this action-packed adventure, I joined Ryan Reynolds’ wisecracking mercenary Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s gritty mutant Wolverine on a joint mission to protect Deadpool’s home universe. The talented Emma Corrin portrayed Cassandra Nova, while Matthew MacFadyen brought Mr. Paradox to life, Rob Delaney voiced Peter, and Leslie Uggams gave an exceptional performance as Blind Al.
