The Penguin's New Comic-Con Trailer Unleashes A War For Gotham's Underworld

As a long-time fan of Batman and his intricate rogues gallery, I’m thrilled to see The Penguin getting his own limited series on HBO. Having followed Colin Farrell’s portrayal of Oz Cobblepot in Matt Reeves’ The Batman earlier this year, I’m excited to delve deeper into the character’s story and motivations.

At San Diego Comic-Con, a preview for The Penguin’s series was unveiled. This forthcoming spin-off from The Batman is labeled as an original production of HBO, and will consist of a limited number of episodes. In this new project, Colin Farrell revisits his portrayal of Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot in The Batman. Instead of viewing chaos as a setback, the Penguin sees it as an opportunity to seize power in the criminal realm. However, the trailer reveals that Oz faces a formidable enemy in his quest for dominance.

After the demise of Carmine Falcone in The Batman, his daughter Sofia Falcone (portrayed by Cristin Milioti) considers herself as the rightful heir to lead the criminal empire. This places her in conflict with Oz. For the first time, we learn that Sophia was previously confined at Arkham Asylum. Additionally, there are hints implying that she could be the notorious vigilante killer referred to as the Hangman.

In the trailer, we see two significant connections formed by Oz. He is depicted caring for his mentally ill mother, Francis Cobb (Deirdre O’Connell), and simultaneously coaching his new driver, Victor Aguilar (Rhenzy Feliz). There appears to be a genuine affection between Oz and Victor. However, this bond may put Oz in peril as Victor expresses fear of the repercussions from Sophia.

Michael Kelly joins the cast of the show, portraying Johnny Vitti. Alongside him, we have Shohreh Aghdashloo as Nadia Maroni, Clancy Brown as Salvatore Maroni, James Madio as Milos Grapa, Scott Cohen as Luca Falcone, Michael Zegen as Alberto Falcone, Theo Rossi as Julian Rush, and Carmen Ejogo as Eve Karlo.

HBO and Max will premiere The Penguin on September 19.
