Pakistan Style ‘Pride and Prejudice’ Film Is English-Language Adaptation of ‘Unmarriageable’ Bestseller (EXCLUSIVE)

As a movie buff with a deep appreciation for cross-cultural adaptations, I am absolutely thrilled about the upcoming film project based on Soniah Kamal’s bestselling novel “Unmarriageable.” This production, which brings together Traveling Picture Show Company (TPSC), Rising Tides, and Hum Network, promises to deliver a unique take on the classic themes of “Pride and Prejudice,” set against the backdrop of contemporary Pakistan.

Partnership formed between Traveling Picture Show Company (TPSC) and Rising Tides, collaborating with Hum Network in Pakistan for the film adaptation of Soniah Kamal’s hit novel “Unmarriageable.”

“Unmarried,” a modern-day retelling of “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen, is set in present-day Pakistan and explores her familiar themes through the experiences of the Binat sisters as they maneuver through contemporary South Asian dating customs.

The project will be one of the few Western productions to be shot entirely in Pakistan. Sadia Ashraf, who penned the script, will co-direct alongside James McMillan. Principal photography is slated to commence in early 2025 in Pakistan.

Carissa Buffel and Luisa Iskin from TPSC, Sadia Ashraf and Shahla Khan from Rising Tides are part of the production team. Hum Network’s Sultana Siddiqui and Badar Ikram also join the team as executive producers, working alongside Kamal.

“Carissa Buffel, TPSC producer and partner, shares our excitement with our esteemed collaborators in bringing this cherished tale to life on the cinema screen. This presents an opportunity to highlight the richness and depth of Pakistani culture for global English-speaking audiences.”

Kamal remarked, “The novel ‘Unmarriageable’ tackles the complexities of managing relationships, self-discovery, and finding contentment – experiences relatable to many women, presented in an original perspective.”

Ashraf expressed his intention: “To counteract misconceptions about Pakistan, we plan to present true cultural variety using humor, fashion, and vibrant hues against the backdrop of architectural grandeur seldom seen by US viewers on screen.”

“Hum Network’s founder, Siddiqui, is thrilled to collaborate with Traveling Picture Show Company and Rising Tides for our inaugural American production. This film will offer a vivid portrayal of Pakistani women’s lives, as well as contribute to Hum Network’s objective of disseminating inspiring female narratives to an untapped audience.”

As someone who has spent years immersed in the world of film and television, I’ve had the pleasure of coming across some truly inspiring projects and talented individuals. TPSC, for instance, is a production company that has left a lasting impression on me with their thought-provoking works like “Freud’s Last Session” and “Share.” The way they tackle complex themes and narratives is nothing short of impressive.
