Joker Doesn't Become Clown Prince Of Crime In Joker 2, Director Says

As a longtime gamer and avid fan of the Joker character, I’m intrigued by the new direction Todd Phillips is taking with Joker: Folie A Deux. The first film was a masterclass in character development, and Phoenix’s portrayal of Arthur Fleck was both chilling and heartbreaking.

In the sequel to “Joker,” titled “Folie A Deux,” we follow the journey of Arthur Fleck, the once struggling comedian and clown actor, as he transforms into the iconic character Joker. However, Phillips, the film’s writer and director, has clarified to Empire magazine that Arthur will not fully embody the true persona of the Criminal Clown Kingpin in this upcoming installment. Instead, they have chosen to explore a different direction with the storyline.

Phillips explained that Arthur isn’t a mastermind criminal as portrayed by some. Instead, he’s an unwitting symbol bearing the consequences of the previous film’s crimes. Simultaneously, he discovers something he longed for – love. Despite being pulled in various directions, his essence has always been about love. We aimed to present this authentic version of him.

In contrast to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight where Heath Ledger portrayed the Joker as a brilliant criminal mind, this method stands out as distinctly dissimilar.

Phillips continued his analysis of Joker: Folie A Deux, explaining that Arthur, portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, isn’t actually a professional singer. Instead, he grew up listening to music played on the radio by his mother. Consequently, in the sequel, Phoenix had to convey Arthur’s singing as if he were belting out tunes privately in the shower. Sharing the screen with Lady Gaga, who portrays Harley “Lee” Quinzel, Phoenix expressed his admiration for her impressive vocal abilities.

“According to Phoenix, Gaga consistently encouraged, ‘Follow your instincts, it’s all good,’ which can be an uneasy experience for those not accustomed to performing yet thrilling at the same time.”

The new movie “Folie A Deux” by Joker, out in October theaters, unveils its latest trailer for you above. Joining Phoenix and Gaga in this sequel are returning cast members Zazie Beetz, as well as esteemed actors Catherine Keener, Brendan Gleeson, and Steve Coogan who have been nominated for Oscars.
