As a dedicated Counter-Strike gamer with years of experience following and participating in various esports tournaments, I can’t help but express my excitement over ESL’s decision to replace BO1 (Best of 1) formats with BO3 (Best of 3) at IEM Cologne 2024.
In response to player and audience suggestions, ESL has decided against hosting Best of 1 matches at IEM Cologne 2024. Instead, all games will be changed to the widely used Best of 3 format.
As an avid fan, I’m thrilled about the BO3 (Best of Three) format in competitions because it provides more opportunities for teams to prove themselves. In the past, we relied on BO1s (Best of Ones) during the initial matches of the Play-In stage, which only granted a single chance for teams to qualify. However, with the switch to BO3 format for subsequent matches, winning teams securely advance into the Group Stage.

As a passionate gamer, I’m thrilled to share that IEM Cologne 2024, an essential Counter-Strike competition, is scheduled from August 7 to August 18, 2024, at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany. The tournament structure goes as follows:
IEM Cologne 2024 Format
Play-In Stage:
- Double-Elimination bracket
- All matches are BO3
- The top eight teams advance to the Group Stage
Group Stage:
- Two double-elimination format: Two groups of eight teams, BO3
- The top three teams from each group advance to the Playoffs:
- Group stage winners advance to the Semifinals
- Group stage runners-up advance to the Quarterfinals (High Seeds_
- Group stage 3rd place teams advance to the Quarterfinals (Low Seeds)
- Playoffs:
- Single-Elimination bracket
- Quarterfinals & Semifinals are BO3
- The Grand Final is BO5
At IEM Cologne 2024, the champions will not only take home the trophy but also secure an automatic spot in IEM Katowice 2025 and the BLAST Premier World Final 2024. This qualification comes with a substantial financial reward of $400,000 from the total prize pool of $1,000,000.
