The Mediapro Studio Acquires Fresco Film, ’Game of Thrones’ Production Services Provider in Spain

As an admirer of the world of film and television production, I am thrilled to witness the latest move by The Mediapro Studio to acquire Fresco Film. This esteemed Spanish production service company, under the visionary leadership of Peter Welter, has left an indelible mark on the industry with its exceptional ability to bring breathtaking locations and seamless tax incentive management to major global productions.

In a significant expansion, Grup Mediapro’s content division, The Mediapro Studio, has purchased Fresco Film – Spain’s leading production services company.

Under the leadership of Peter Welter, Fresco played a pivotal role in bringing “Game of Thrones” production to Spain for Season 5. This significant move led Spain to offer incentives for foreign film shoots starting early in 2015, aiming to entice HBO to continue filming the series there.

I had the privilege of working behind the scenes on some incredible productions over the past few years. For Spanish versions of “Game of Thrones” seasons 6, 7, and 8, as well as “House of the Dragon” seasons 1 and 2, I was part of the team. Similarly, I contributed to “Westworld” season 3, “The Blacklist,” “Narcos: Mexico,” and “Killing Eve” season 3. Additionally, I worked on movies like “Spiderman: Far From Home,” “Uncharted,” “Terminator: Dark Fate,” and “The Covenant.” Each project brought unique challenges and learning opportunities that I cherished as a devoted cinema enthusiast.

Fresco Film distinguishes itself with its knack for bringing breathtaking landscapes to life, transforming places like the enchanting islet of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe in the Bay of Biscay into iconic film sets, such as “Game of Thrones’s” Dragonstone. Furthermore, Fresco Film’s expertise in managing tax incentives and forging strong connections with major studios, producers, and streaming platforms have earned them a reputable position within the industry. An impressive roster of collaborators attests to their success: Max, Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime Video, SkyShowtime, Sony Pictures, Warner Bros. Discovery, BBC Studios, Paramount Pictures, Hulu, NBC, Peacock, Fremantle, Sky Atlantic, ZDF, ARD, and ITV Studios, among numerous others.

Laura Fernández Espeso highlighted the significant reputation and acclaim that Fresco Film has earned among leading international production companies. She expressed that their extensive expertise and high-level professionalism have made them a go-to choice in the global industry. The announcement of Fresco Film joining The Mediapro Studio is noteworthy, and it comes on the heels of Cimarrón’s recent acquisition – an exciting development for the industry as a whole.

“It’s a privilege for us to join Grup Mediapro. By combining our strengths, we can enhance our production quality and most importantly, improve the human aspect. Working with Grup Mediapro is a long-held aspiration for us, bringing about logical, creative, professional, and personnel growth,” said Peter Welter, CEO of Fresco Film.

A potential alternative could be to transform a traditional service arrangement into a collaborative production between The Mediapro Studio and its new US branch, based in Los Angeles. Leveraging The Mediapro Studio’s extensive production experience and English-language production focus.

In September 2023, it was revealed that Mediapro Studio purchased Cimarrón, a well-known production company based in Uruguay. During the pandemic, Cimarrón gained recognition as a top service provider for major streaming productions. To expand their reach, both Cimarrón and Mediapro Studio have established offices in significant Latin American markets, providing additional production opportunities for the global media giant.

At Fresco Film, we’ve taken the lead in promoting sustainability by establishing a specialized team responsible for making every project and filming session eco-friendly. They utilize environmental assessments tools and collaborate with eco-conscious vendors to minimize our carbon footprint.

In 2015 and 2018, the company received accolades from the Location Managers Guild International (LMGI) for their contributions to “Game of Thrones”. More recently, in 2020, they were recognized for their services on “Killing Eve” with another award from the same esteemed organization.
