Emmy Predictions 2024: First Winner Projections Following Historic Nominations

As a seasoned film and television critic with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve had the pleasure (and sometimes the pain) of watching countless productions that showcase the best and worst of what our industry has to offer. And let me tell you, this year’s Emmy nominations have truly outdone themselves in terms of sheer talent and creativity.

Weekly Commentary (Updated: July 25, 2024): Emmys done good.

If you keep up with the DEI trends in Hollywood’s award shows, nomination day can be an emotionally taxing experience. However, this year is different. Although studios have retreated from their pledges made in 2020, the Television Academy has taken substantial steps to shine a golden spotlight on a varied group of nominees. What’s more, there’s a greater selection of shows, genres, studios, and networks being recognized.

In the world of acting awards, only around one out of every three nominees are individuals of color. However, there was a noteworthy enhancement, as 30 actors and actresses of color were recognized among the 96 nominations spread across 16 categories – marking a 20% rise compared to the previous year. Despite this record-breaking number of 42 individuals of color being nominated in the acting categories during the 2022 season, none went on to win an award. This year, however, is expected to bring about a change in results.

Significant progress was made this year in the representation of Indigenous performers at the Oscars. Previously, the late actor August Schellenberg, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 2007 for his role as Sitting Bull in “Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee” on HBO, held the distinction of being the only Native American actor recognized. Recently, however, two Indigenous women have been added to this list: Lily Gladstone for her performance in “Under the Bridge,” and Kali Reis for her role in “True Detective: Night Country.” Moreover, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, who was unexpectedly nominated for Best Lead Actor for his work in the final season of “Reservation Dogs,” became the first Indigenous actor to be recognized in this category.

Despite the fact that only around 6% of acting submissions came from Latino performers, five notable actors managed to find success: Selena Gomez (who received a leading comedy actress nomination for “Only Murders in the Building”), Sofia Vergara (receiving a lead actress limited nomination for “Griselda”), Liza Colón-Zayas (earning a supporting comedy actress nomination for “The Bear”), Nava Mau (obtaining a supporting actress limited nomination for “Baby Reindeer”), and Néstor Carbonell (receiving a guest drama actor nomination for “Shōgun”). As an executive producer of “Only Murders,” Gomez now holds the record as the most Emmy-nominated Latina producer in any series category, with a total of three nominations.

Issa López, the mastermind behind “True Detective: Night Country,” earned recognition for her roles as director, writer, and producer in the show’s fourth season. She is now the first Latina to be nominated for directing and the second for writing, following René Echevarria in 2005 with “The 4400.”

In the historical epic “Shōgun” produced by FX, two leading Asian actors, Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai, along with supporting actors Tadanobu Asano and Takehiro Hira, were nominated for acting awards in 2022, making up the majority of AAPI (Asian American and Pacific Islander) nominees in this category. Additionally, Maya Erskine from “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” was nominated as a second Asian woman in any category, joining Sandra Oh who was recognized for her executive producer role in the TV movie “Quiz Lady.” Oh is also nominated as an actor alongside her co-star Awkwafina and director Jessica Yu.

Last year, there were substantial advancements for Black actors in television. Quinta Brunson, who was the second Black woman to receive a leading comedy actress award, gained her third acting nomination for ABC’s “Abbott Elementary.” Furthermore, Ayo Edebiri from “The Bear” and Maya Rudolph of “Loot” were also recognized with nominations. Rudolph even secured the most nominations of the year, including for voice-over work, guest appearances, and an original song. Additionally, Brunson, Edebiri, Gomez, and Rudolph became the first all-women of color lineup in any leading acting category.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news about the recent Emmy nominations. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Salli Richardson-Whitfield, an exceptional actress and now unexpected director for HBO’s “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty,” made history by becoming the first Black woman ever nominated in the directing category. This is a significant achievement that breaks barriers and paves the way for more diverse representation in the industry.

In spite of a significant drop of over 33% in total submissions, Emmy voters made an effort to be inclusive in the initial round, demonstrating that diverse narratives and talents resonate with viewers when presented with the chance. This serves as evidence that DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) is not a fleeting trend, but a vital component of a prosperous and award-winning future for studios.

Over two successive nights on September 7-8, the Creative Arts and Governors Gala award ceremonies are scheduled to take place. In contrast, the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, which will be broadcasted, are slated for ABC on September 15, a Sunday.
