Deadpool And Wolverine Ending Explained: What It Means For The MCU's X-Men

As someone who grew up in the golden age of Marvel movies, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia watching Deadpool & Wolverine. The chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman is electric, transporting us back to a time when the X-Men films ruled the box office.

Heed this note: The following article delves deeply into the details of Deadpool and Wolverine, revealing major plot points, surprises, and finales. Proceed with caution if you wish to preserve the element of surprise.

As a long-time fan of the X-Men universe and having grown up reading the comics and watching the movies, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the recent announcement that Deadpool and Wolverine are joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Having seen the immense success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which paid homage to previous iterations of the character, it feels only natural for Fox’s Marvel properties to follow suit.

In simpler terms, this attempt at wrapping up storylines doesn’t compare to “No Way Home” due to an excessive amount of material and limited X-Men appearances, specifically only Wolverine. Therefore, it fails to provide a satisfying conclusion for the older X-Men series as a whole. However, it leaves room for potential future resolutions, with the groundwork already laid after “The Marvels” last year.

After the happenings of Deadpool 2, not much time has passed before Wade, aka Deadpool, pays a visit to Happy Hogan with the intention of joining the Avengers. Unfortunately, Happy turns him down. In response, Deadpool decides to call it quits on his violent escapades and instead takes up a new career selling cars.

Later on, representatives from the Time Variance Authority (TVA) appear and take Wade out of time for a meeting with a man called Paradox. Paradox explains that Deadpool’s universe is collapsing since its anchor, Wolverine, was killed in Logan, and he needs Deadpool to help speed up the process using a tool called a “time ripper.” It’s uncertain why Paradox chose Deadpool for this task or what exactly he intended for Deadpool to do, as these topics remain unexplored. Instead, Deadpool decides to disobey and travel through different timelines in search of a replacement for the deceased Wolverine.

After being shown an entertaining sequence of various Wolverine versions, including one portrayed by Henry Cavill, we encounter Logan in a bar, drunk. Deadpool escorts this version back to the Time Variance Authority (TVA), perplexing Paradox since this doesn’t contribute to his plan. In response, Paradox uses a glowing TVA time stick to transport them both to “The Void,” a desolate area located at the end of every timeline.

In our encounters with numerous characters from Fox Marvel films, we frequently receive Mad Max-inspired jokes. Among them are Pyro from X2 and The Last Stand, as well as a fresh interpretation of Juggernaut, complete with an amusing, comic-true-to-life helmet. This group is headed by Cassandra Nova, Professor X’s wicked twin sister who perished in the womb. She possesses all of Xavier’s abilities but must physically touch someone’s brain to read their thoughts – an action she performs frequently and unsettlingly on Deadpool and Wolverine. Essentially, she rules over this realm as its deity.

In the beginning, she showcases the initial members of the community’s hero rebellion for us. Among them is Johnny Storm from the initial Fantastic Four films, portrayed by Chris Evans. Although Evans’ screen time is brief, it leaves a delightful impression. Deadpool later reveals that Johnny made threatening and violent remarks towards Cassandra, which he insists were false. Unfazed, Cassandra strips Johnny of his flesh with a mere gesture, leaving only bones and meat behind. Fortunately, there are more resistance members to join the fray: Dafne Keen as X-23, Jennifer Garner as Elektra, Wesley Snipes as Blade, and Channing Tatum (who was long-rumored for the role) as Gambit. (However, Tatum’s project never came to fruition.)

Collaboratively, Deadpool and Wolverine charge towards Cassandra’s fortress, nestled within Ant-Man’s colossal body (the reason for this is unexplained). By placing the Juggernaut’s massive helmet upon her, they successfully neutralize Cassandra. However, during their battle, Pyro fires at Cassandra, having been instructed by Paradox that he would be allowed to return to his own time if he eliminated her. This act prompts Wolverine to intervene and save Cassandra, which unexpectedly triggers Cassandra to transport them back to their original timeline using a sling ring she had acquired from Doctor Strange at an earlier moment in history.

After discovering that Paradox had attempted to harm her, she acted decisively and traveled to New York to utilize the time ripper herself. Inadvertently, this released all Deadpool versions from the Void. Confronted with this new threat, our Deadpool and Wolverine engaged in a fierce battle. Although they sustained severe injuries, only Nicepool, lacking regenerative abilities, did not survive.

As a seasoned comic book reader and avid fan of the X-Men universe, I’ve seen my fair share of wild and outlandish storylines. But even for someone with my level of expertise, the encounter between Cassandra, Deadpool, Wolverine, and Madonna was a doozy that left me utterly astonished.

As a seasoned comic book reader and avid fan of the X-Men universe, I’ve seen my fair share of twists and turns in the lives of these beloved characters. In this particular storyline, the unexpected arrival of Hunter B-15 to arrest Paradox for his unauthorized timeline manipulations was a game-changer. The tension was palpable as Deadpool, ever the wild card, pleaded with Hunter B-15 to save the Fox universe and rescue key members like Elektra, Blade, and others from the clutches of the Void. I held my breath, knowing full well that anything could happen in this world.

What Deadpool & Wolverine’s ending means for the MCU

From a gamer’s perspective, I find it intriguing how they chose to introduce Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in this movie without any significant connections to Wolverine or the MCU itself. Although the Time Variance Authority (TVA) and The Void were initially established within the MCU through Loki, they exist beyond it, operating outside of time and above the multiverse. These concepts serve as the overarching narratives for all Marvel stories now that most properties fall under this expansive franchise.

As a longtime fan of Marvel Comics, I’m thrilled to share my perspective on the upcoming integration of mutants into the MCU. Having grown up reading X-Men comics and watching their animated series, the thought of seeing these iconic characters interact with the Avengers is a dream come true.

Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine in the X-Men film series was invaluable, with movies featuring him performing strongly at the box office. This is why he is referred to as the “cornerstone” or “pillar” of that cinematic universe. With Jackman reportedly ending his tenure as Wolverine and the Marvel Cinematic Universe expanding, the Fox-Marvel universe appears to have reached its expiration date and may be ripe for a reboot. Consequently, Paradox devises a plan to alter the timeline.

At the conclusion of the film, nothing significant has transpired, leaving all previous Marvel series untouched in their respective timelines, including Deadpool. However, it sets up a multiversal framework where characters like Thomas Jane’s Punisher can potentially be incorporated into larger Marvel stories if desired. Essentially, the movie allows for potential changes without actually bringing them about itself.

Does Deadpool & Wolverine have a post-credits scene?

After the Deadpool & Wolverine film ends, there are plenty of exciting extras during the credits. Instead of just the typical Marvel post-credit scenes, you’ll get a collection of behind-the-scenes clips from the X-Men series. These videos feature Jackman and several other former cast members who didn’t appear in the movie itself.

After that, there’s an additional amusing scene during the end credits. Deadpool employs TVA technology to verify Johnny’s previous statements about Cassandra, and Chris Evans delivers a crass monologue as a result.
