Ryan Reynolds’ Original ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Plan Was to Shoot It Under the Disguise of an ‘Awful’ Fake Movie, Then ‘Five Minutes in the Marvel Logo’ Appears

As a long-time Marvel fan and movie reviewer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that I was absolutely blown away by Ryan Reynolds’ latest revelation during his appearance on “Hot Ones.” The idea of filming an entire Marvel movie in secret and fooling audiences with a bait-and-switch gimmick using a fake movie called “Alpha Cop” is nothing short of brilliant, audacious, and borderline insane.

I was thrilled when Ryan Reynolds appeared on the latest episode of “Hot Ones” alongside his “Deadpool & Wolverine” co-star Hugh Jackman. During their chat, Ryan shared a surprising revelation about our Marvel blockbuster that hadn’t been widely discussed before. He mentioned being amazed that we made it through filming without major surprises getting leaked online. While there had been plenty of buzz around the cameos in the movie, Ryan dropped a bombshell about his initial concept for the film that was even more shocking.

“Our initial plan for this film was to produce a deliberately low-quality movie titled ‘Alpha Cop.’ I went as far as designing a poster for it. The story revolved around two men who, by sharing a single brain, made the ideal law enforcement duo.”

Reynolds said the poster tagline for “Alpha Cop” read: “Two cops, one brain, all balls.”

The idea appears to have been to cast Reynolds and Jackman in the fake movie “Alpha Cop” and have them film “Deadpool & Wolverine” instead in secret. The fake movie would be promoted and then audiences would get the bait and switch of a lifetime in the theater.

Reynolds described the fake film as intended to be quite disappointing for viewers. Only a small audience of around 10 people in America would attend its opening weekend. However, if one persevered through the entire movie, they would be disappointed to discover at the last minute that it was actually a “Deadpool & Wolverine” film instead. The disappointment would be particularly heart-wrenching if one had invested their time and effort in watching it until the very end.

As a movie reviewer, I’d say: “Filming an entire Marvel movie in secret is no easy feat, but Reynolds and the Deadpool & Wolverine team pulled it off fairly well, keeping some major cameo surprises under wraps. However, executive producer Wendy Jacobson revealed to GamesRadar+ that the studio resorted to planting fake leaks both online and offline to safeguard the secrecy of these cameos in the final cut.”

Shawn Levy, the director of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” shared with Entertainment Weekly earlier this month that there are numerous cameos in their film. However, he emphasized that these cameos and characters weren’t intended to be the main focus or narrative of the movie. Instead, they have been subtly incorporated throughout.

Check out the entire conversation between Reynolds and Jackman on “Hot Ones” in the video below. The film “Deadpool & Wolverine” is set to hit theaters on July 26.
