As a lifelong Transformers fan, I was absolutely thrilled to hear about the upcoming animated “Transformers One” movie and witness the exciting new footage revealed at this year’s Comic-Con. The opportunity to see Chris Hemsworth voice Optimus Prime and Brian Tyree Henry as Megatron brought a sense of nostalgia and excitement that only grew as we delved deeper into the world of Cybertron and its rich history.
In a fresh trailer unveiled for “Transformers One,” the animated Transformers film making its debut as the first full-length Transformers production in nearly four decades, Chris Hemsworth, Brian Tyree Henry, Keegan-Michael Key, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, and director Josh Cooley (“Toy Story 4”) came together to share an exciting sneak peek. The new trailer included not just the trailer itself, but also three extended scenes from the upcoming movie.
The title suggests that this film tells the backstory of two characters: Orion Pax, later known as Optimus Prime (portrayed by Hemsworth), and D-16, who becomes Megatron (voiced by Henry). Their friendship evolves into enmity on the planet Cybertron. In addition, B-127, an early iteration of Bumblebee, is featured, as well as Elita, who regrettably couldn’t make it to the panel because she’s currently working on the next “Jurassic” film and is voiced by Scarlett Johansson.
As a moviegoer excitedly sharing some behind-the-scenes info, I’d say: “There are some talented actors who weren’t present at the recording session. Laurence Fishburne lends his voice to Alpha Trion, Jon Hamm voices Steninel Prime, and we even have Steve Buscemi joining the cast as Starscream!”
The show started by presenting clips of Optimus Prime and Megatron engaging in fights throughout various Transformers versions, from the 1980s animated series to Michael Bay’s live-action films. They emphasized their legendary rivalry as “one of the most famous,” and hinted that “Transformers One” would explore their camaraderie before the enmity emerged.
At the conclusion of the panel, a fresh trailer for the film debuted, showcasing an abundance of new scenes. Many of these newly-revealed sequences were previously unveiled through three lengthy previews from the movie.
After that, the filmmakers showed an extended scene from the beginning of the movie showcasing the Icon 5000 on Cybertron. Cooley explained that this was “essentially the Olympics of Cybertron.” He wanted to give viewers a glimpse into Cybertronian society at its peak, highlighting their enjoyment and excitement on this planet. In the scene, Orion and D-16, who can’t transform but work as miners instead, participate in an exhilarating race with other Transformers using jet packs and cunning tactics to leave everyone watching amazed.

In the last segment, the Deceptions’ earlier versions, the High Guard, headed by Starscream and his lieutenants Soundwave and Shockwave, were presented. The principal quartet uncovered that the High Guard had devolved from Cybertron’s protectors into a chaotic group of soldiers obsessed with, as Starscream put it, “the superiority of one robot over another.” By the scene’s conclusion, D-16 managed to defeat Starscream and assumed control over the High Guard.
Charmingly, every video ended with a lively animation of the characters inviting viewers back to the discussion, reminiscent of the brief interludes shown following commercials in the classic animated program.
Key Insight: As children, each actor enjoyed playing with Transformers action figures. Hemsworth recalled their attempts to dismantle and rebuild these toys, explaining, “It was quite a challenging task for us.” More recently, they were provided with the toys again, this time with the assignment of transforming them back and forth. Unfortunately, none of them managed to succeed in properly reassembling any of the figures.
When asked why he was drawn to portraying the young Megatron, Henry shared that as a child, his parents bought him exclusively villain action figures. However, he always transformed those characters into heroes in his playtime.
Among the actors, Key stood out as the most enthusiastic fan. He engaged the audience in a lively sing-along of the 1980s cartoon show’s theme song, finishing with a wink and a joke, “Alright, we’ve established who’s over forty.” Furthermore, he adjusted his voice in the movie to mimic the monotonous robot tone of Soundwave from the animated series.
“Di Bonaventura expressed that this film offers an unprecedented opportunity to connect with robots like never before,” he shared, adding that it’s unique in having no human characters present. This revelation sparked excitement among some viewers. The movie is set an astonishing 3 billion years prior to the main storyline’s events.
