Mr. Chalamet Man, Play a Song For Us

As a seasoned movie reviewer with a deep appreciation for biopics and music-centric films, I’ve seen my fair share of actors stepping into the shoes of iconic musical legends. But Timothée Chalamet‘s transformation into Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown” is something truly captivating.

Timothée Chalamet is transforming from Barb to Bob. He’s taking on the role of Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s film “A Complete Unknown.” This month, Chalamet was spotted filming the biopic in Manhattan. Fans are excited to see the fruits of his extensive preparation for this part. Reportedly, he listened to a marathon 12-hour playlist of unreleased Dylan songs in preparation. The movie focuses on the pivotal moment at the Newport Music Festival when Dylan went electric. This event has been portrayed before, in Todd Haynes’ “I’m Not There” and to some extent in “Factory Girl.” Despite the previous depictions, let Chalamet bring you an authentic rendition …

Ladies and gentlemen, the trailer.

Timothée Chalamet effortlessly adopts the rock star persona and even sings an impressive cover of “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” by Bob Dylan. Unlike certain trailers today, his live performance gives a glimpse into Dylan’s emotionally turbulent journey towards fame.

What do we know so far?

By early July, filming came to an end as depicted in images where Chalamet is seen near a car in sunglasses and engaged in reading on a bench.

Previously at Cannes Film Festival last May, Mangold shared details about an upcoming project with Deadline during the promotion of “Indiana Jones: The Dial of Destiny.” At that time, he revealed Benedict Cumberbatch would portray folk legend Pete Seeger in the movie. Initially, Seeger was instrumental in Dylan’s rise to fame, inviting him to perform at Newport Folk Festival before his stardom. However, due to scheduling issues, reportedly Ed Norton took over the role instead. Evidence exists in the form of photos showing Norton playing the banjo.

Who else is in the cast?

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Monica Barbaro from “Top Gun: Maverick” will be joining the cast as Joan Baez, and Elle Fanning will portray a fictionalized Dylan paramour of the early ’60s in an upcoming production. Boyd Holbrook is set to channel his inner Johnny Cash for the director’s vision, according to Rolling Stone. Additionally, Scoot McNairy, Dan Fogler, Will Harrison, Charlie Tahan, P.J. Byrne, Eli Brown, Nick Pupo, Big Bill Morganfield, Laura Kariuki, Eric Berryman, David Alan Basche, Joe Tippett, and James Austin Johnson have been announced as new cast members. Regrettably, Austin Butler has not yet confirmed his participation in the project.

Is Timmy really singing live?

Affirmatively, Mangold revealed that Chalamet and Barbaro authentically performed as Dylan and Baez during an interview with Rolling Stone. However, unlike a regular film production where one can swap out a poor take or replace a single action, Mangold explained, “If Timmy has the courage to expose himself and give it his all, I owe it to him to stand behind the camera and capture it.” Additionally, due to numerous COVID-related setbacks, Chalamet and Barbaro were given the opportunity to enhance their musical abilities. According to Mangold, “Timmy was invested in this project. He was eager to participate.”

When is it coming out?

The release date for “A Complete Unknown” is no longer a mystery. Director Mangold expedited the post-production process, aiming to have the film premiere towards the end of this year.
