‘The Boy and the Heron’ Streaming Release Date Set on Max

As a devoted admirer of anime and animation, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming U.S. streaming debut of Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron” on Warner Bros. Discovery’s Max. This masterpiece, which won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature this year, will be available to stream exclusively on Max in the U.S. starting September 6.

In September, “The Boy and the Heron,” a critically acclaimed animated film by Hayao Miyazaki that won an Oscar, will be available to stream for the first time in the U.S. on Warner Bros. Discovery’s platform, Max.

Starting September 6, Friday, in the US, you’ll be able to watch the new Studio Ghibli film, “The Boy and the Heron,” which is both written and directed by Miyazaki and marks his first feature film in a decade. This hand-drawn, semi-autobiographical animated movie is now part of Max’s exclusive U.S. library under their extended multiyear deal.

Outside the US and Japan, “The Boy and the Heron” by Studio Ghibli will be streamable on Netflix starting this spring, following a recently signed deal for their entire film collection. A release date for “The Boy and the Heron” on Netflix has yet to be announced.

In the English adaptation of “The Boy and the Heron,” Christian Bale, Dave Bautista, Gemma Chan, Willem Dafoe, Karen Fukuhara, Mark Hamill, Robert Pattinson, and Florence Pugh lend their voices to the characters. This film is a production of Studio Ghibli’s co-founder Toshio Suzuki, with a musical score composed by Joe Hisaishi, who has long worked with Miyazaki. The movie holds the record for the greatest earnings yet for international distributor GKids, raking in $46.8 million at the domestic box office.

I had the privilege of coming across the intriguing synopsis for this film. In my own words,

I’m an avid film enthusiast and animation lover, so you can imagine my excitement when I heard that “The Boy and the Heron” by the legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki, won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film this year. This marks his second win in this category, following his triumph with “Spirited Away.” What’s even more impressive is that he also received an honorary Academy Award in 2014 for his exceptional contributions to cinema. With a career spanning over four decades, Miyazaki has left an indelible mark on the animation industry and continues to inspire new generations of filmmakers with his creativity and innovation. As someone who grew up watching his films, it’s truly humbling to see him recognized for his lifelong dedication and passion for storytelling through animation.

Since 2020, Studio Ghibli’s collection has resided with Max in the United States, as HBO Max initially introduced the service. Following a recent agreement with GKids, over two dozen Studio Ghibli titles such as “My Neighbor Totoro,” “Kiki’s Delivery Service,” “Ponyo,” “Spirited Away,” and “Howl’s Moving Castle” will remain exclusively available on Max in the US for an extended period.
