Toronto Film Festival Adds ‘Mother Mother,’ ‘My Fathers’ Daughter,’ ‘On Falling’ to Discovery Lineup

As a film enthusiast who has attended numerous Toronto Film Festivals over the years, I am thrilled to see such an eclectic and diverse lineup for this year’s Discovery program. With more than 25 countries represented, it’s a testament to the power of cinema to bring us closer together as a global community.

The Toronto Film Festival’s programming team has revealed the selection for their Discovery section, featuring a diverse array of modern films from around the world.

In this year’s lineup, we have 24 films from over 25 countries like Argentina, Bangladesh, Colombia, Greece, Italy, and Thailand. The program is filled with 20 new releases, such as “Bonjour Tristesse” by Durga Chew-Bose, “Horizonte” by César Augusto Acevedo, “Mother Mother” by K’naan Warsame, “On Falling” by Laura Carreira, and “The Courageous” by Jasmin Gordon.

Dorota Lech, Jason Anderson, Kelly Boutsalis, Diana Cadavid, Robyn Citizen, Nataleah Hunter-Young, June Kim, Jason Ryle, and Norm Wilner are responsible for choosing the films for the 2024 Discovery category at TIFF. Notable filmmakers such as Alfonso Cuarón, Christopher Nolan, Yorgos Lanthimos, and Barry Jenkins have graduated from this esteemed program, as mentioned by TIFF.

I’m thrilled to share that in this year’s festival lineup, I get to witness the opening film directed by David Gordon Green with Ben Stiller, titled “Nutcrackers.” And what a fitting end to the 49th edition it will be with Rebel Wilson making her directorial debut, “The Deb.” Other films gracing our screens include Ron Howard’s gripping survival thriller “Eden,” Marielle Heller’s chilling horror comedy “Nightbitch” featuring Amy Adams, the captivating animated film “The Wild Robot,” and John Crowley’s poignant drama “We Live in Time,” starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh. Can’t wait to be a part of this cinematic journey!

This year’s festival will run from Sept. 5-15.
