As a devoted cinephile with a deep appreciation for the art of filmmaking and a passion for discovering new talent, I am thrilled to learn about Michèle Flury’s upcoming feature debut “Pas Ta Maman,” which has garnered significant attention at the Locarno Film Festival. The fact that Hugofilm and Sommerhaus Filmproduktion have joined forces to produce this project is a testament to its potential and promise.
Hugofilm has become a part of Sommerhaus Filmproduktion, serving as the Swiss producer for Michèle Flury’s first feature film “Pas Ta Maman.” This project, which received the Locarno Pro Market Breakout Award during last year’s Locarno Festival, will once again be showcased at this year’s Match Me! Forum held at the Swiss festival.
Previously, the project took part in the Alliance 4 Development and Alphapanda events in Locarno, where it received the Market Breakout Award. In recognition of her exceptional short film work, Flury was honored with the Best New Swiss Filmmaker Award at the 2022 Locarno Film Festival and the Young Director Award at this year’s Basel Film Awards.
“Mandy, a 24-year-old nanny working for diplomats on the Mediterranean coast, is the protagonist of “Pas Ta Maman.” Despite enduring repeated sexual abuse from her employer’s husband and lacking support from those around her, Mandy plots a violent retaliation.”
The German producer of the film describes “Pas Ta Maman” as a raw yet entertaining exploration of the serious issue of woman abuse through the use of contrasting genres. It delves into the experiences of being sexually objectified, victimized, and the will to resist.
Established in 2015, Sommerhaus Filmproduktion is the brainchild of Jochen Laube and Fabian Maubach. This production company has an impressive resume, with notable works such as Burhan Qurbani’s “Berlin Alexanderplatz,” which earned five German Film Awards and a European Film Award, and Katharina Eyssen’s Netflix series “The Empress,” which took home the best drama series award at the 2023 International Emmy Awards. Additionally, Caroline Link’s “When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit” sold over a million admissions and was awarded Best Children’s Film at the German Film Prize in 2019.
Since its establishment in 1999, Hugofilm Features has created over fifty films, with notable productions such as “Vitus” (2007), which received the Best Feature award at the Swiss Film Prize and represented Switzerland in the international feature category for the Oscars that year. Most recently, their 2022 production, titled “A Piece of Sky,” made its debut in competition at the Berlinale film festival.
At Match Me!, Felix Schreiber from Sommerhaus Production will share information about their upcoming projects. Regarding Michèle Flury’s debut feature, he remarked, “After her successful short film ‘Heartbeat’ at Locarno, Michèle Flury has chosen another female perspective for her debut feature. The tone remains moody and sensual but is now more intense, dynamic, and reflective of the current zeitgeist.”
“Michèle’s compelling story in ‘Pas Ta Maman’ explores themes of class disparity and misuse of power, sexual exploration and violence, ultimately leading to rape and homicide. This thought-provoking psychological drama will captivate and leave audiences pondering long after the cinema lights have dimmed,” he concluded.
Schreiber reports that the “Pas Ta Maman” team intends to secure a theatrical distributor, while also looking for a platform capable of broadly disseminating the film post-theatrical release.
Based on my own experiences and observations, I strongly believe that working with platforms offers a unique opportunity to connect with a wider audience, especially the younger generation. When filmmakers share stories that resonate with their unique perspectives and the zeitgeist of their time, these films deserve to be seen. However, to maintain relevance and reach a broader audience, it’s essential that our work transcends the boundaries of traditional cinemas.
“The production of ‘Pas Ta Maman’ is wrapping up as we speak, with filming set to begin in either 2025 or early 2026, subject to any potential collaborations in the future.”
