When Monster Hunter Wilds experienced a dip in players over the summer – a major concern for any game company – Capcom quickly released fun, summery outfits, including swimsuits. The bikini skin for the character Gemma proved popular, so they followed it up with a new set of cosmetic animations. These animations include a playful scene of Gemma crouching right in front of the player.
The biggest news from Tokyo Game Show for Monster Hunter Wilds was the announcement of Title Update 4, bringing back the popular monster Gogmazios from Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate in December. We also learned more about Title Update 3, which is heavily featuring MMO-style gameplay thanks to a collaboration with Final Fantasy 14. However, when thinking about what will likely generate the most revenue for Capcom, the third pack of cosmetic DLC seems like a safe bet.
I’m not overly critical, but it’s amusing that Capcom is repeating this approach so quickly. While Gemma is popular, this cosmetic bundle features several characters with new quest completion animations. One highlight is stealing Alma’s glasses. I appreciate the idea because seeing the same Palico and Seikret animations after many quests gets repetitive, though I’d like to see more variety in the base game as well.
Okay, so I’ve been thinking about that one shot of Gemma in the DLC trailer – the one around 26:44 in the stream – and it feels like it’s there for a reason. I’m pretty sure if you buy the bikini skin for her, you’ll see it in that exact animation. Turns out that ‘emergency bikini button‘ everyone joked about wasn’t a button at all, more like a dial, and someone definitely turned it up!
This content is part of a paid cosmetic pack, pack 3, which features fox ears and a tail, new outfits for your buddies, accessories, and add-ons for your weapons and tent. As a bonus, there are also free items available, including four classic gestures from past Monster Hunter games, such as the popular shadow box.
The second cosmetic DLC for Monster Hunter Wilds cost $24.99 as a pack, with individual items like hairstyles at $1.99 and gestures/layered armor at $7.99. Given those prices, I anticipate these new quest completion animations will likely be more expensive.
As of today, there’s over $354 worth of downloadable content available for Monster Hunter Wilds on Steam. While most of it is cosmetic, a significant portion of that cost comes from the digital soundtrack, which is priced at $74.99.
