Omar Apollo to Make Acting Debut in Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Queer’

As a film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for both music and literature, I am thrilled to learn about Omar Apollo‘s upcoming role in Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ novel “Queer.” The prospect of seeing Apollo on the silver screen, alongside acting heavyweights Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey, is an exciting development in his already impressive career.

Omar Apollo is slated to appear in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film “Queer,” which is based on William S. Burroughs’ 1985 semi-autobiographical novel of the same name. This indie project, unveiled during the Venice Film Festival announcement on Tuesday, will feature Daniel Craig portraying Burroughs’ alternate persona and Drew Starkey from “Outer Banks” in the cast as well.

In the 1940s, the movie “Queer” is set in Mexico City, even though it was filmed at Rome’s restored Cinecittà Studios. The story revolves around Lee (Craig), an American college student and bar owner, who makes a living through part-time jobs and GI Bill benefits after World War II. The narrative explores themes of sex and drug use. Lee develops an infatuation with Allerton (Starkey), a younger, discharged American Navy serviceman who is addicted to drugs. Despite his initial indifference, Allerton eventually gives in to Lee’s advances.

As a movie critic, I’m excited to share that I had the pleasure of learning about an upcoming film adaptation of a Burroughs novel. This intriguing project is being brought to life by American playwright Justin Kuritzkes in collaboration with Italian director Guadagnino. The duo, known for their work on “Challengers” featuring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist, are once again teaming up to create something magical. This anticipated film will make its debut at the prestigious 81st Venice Film Festival, gracing our screens from August 28th to September 7th.

Apollo recently released a 14-song LP, “God Said No,” telling EbMaster that he was largely inspired by film scores. On his own on-screen interests, Apollo offered, “I feel like I need a little more training and studying when it comes to [acting and screenwriting]. With music, I fixate on [a producer or artist] and go through their whole discography, so I plan to take a similar approach with film.” He added that he and Guadagnino first met through Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson.

During an interview at the 2022 Hitmakers event hosted by EbMaster, where Apollo was awarded the Future Icon Prize, Apollo shared his aspiration to try acting, jokingly mentioning, “The change from musician to actor… is amusing, but I guess I’ll give it a shot!”
