When is Gamescom 2024?

At Gamescom 2024, the excitement unfolds from Wednesday, August 21 to Sunday, August 25. Initially, this exclusive event is only accessible to media and business professionals on the 21st. However, starting from the 22nd until the 25th, the doors are open to the public. The venue for this grand occasion is the Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany.

I’ve been to a few big events in my life, and let me tell you, the cost of tickets can really add up. But I was pleasantly surprised when I looked into getting tickets for this upcoming game fair, Gamescom. The standard public tickets are priced at €29.50, which is certainly not a small fee. However, if you’re able to attend after 4 PM, the price drops significantly to just €9.50. That’s a huge difference and could save me quite a bit of money.

What to expect

At Gamescom, which starts on Wednesday, August 21, there is an opening event called Gamescom Opening Night Live held the previous day, on Tuesday. During this event, game developers are expected to unveil new titles, show trailers, and make other announcements. However, the main event for attendees is exploring the exhibition floor, where they can interact with publisher booths, witness competitive gaming tournaments, and enjoy a “cosplay village” showcasing impressive costumes. Additionally, there’s a “campus” area dedicated to providing information about careers in the video game industry. The show floor also features a section for indie games and a merchandise hall where visitors can purchase related items.

At Gamescom, you’ll get a taste of the various offerings, sights, and experiences. For further details, check out the official website.

No Switch 2 at Gamescom

Nintendo is working on a new gaming device, but it won’t be unveiled at Gamescom. The company announced earlier in the year that they have decided not to participate in this year’s Gamescom. Although Nintendo representatives might still attend the event for competitor analysis, business negotiations, or private demos.

Gamescom awards

At Gamescom, not just the actual games are recognized, but awards are given out for various aspects such as Best Gameplay, Most Epic, and Best Visuals, along with categories for Xbox, Switch, PC, PlayStation, and Mobile games. Publishers need to pay €440 for a single category, €800 for up to three, and an additional €200 for each additional category they want their game considered in. Indie games only need to pay half of these fees. In 2023, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was the star award recipient.
