Love Island USA’s Winning Couple Thought America Was Sick of Them

As someone who’s been following the Love Island USA journey, I’m absolutely thrilled for Serena and Kordell. Their story of finding love on the show despite its ups and downs is truly inspiring. I can only imagine what it must be like to experience all those emotions firsthand, with the added pressure of being in the public eye.

In the sixth season of “Love Island USA,” Serena Page and Kordell Beckham captivated viewers as they entered the villa wearing coordinating neon-green outfits. Their interracial relationship resonated with many on TikTok, who shared clips of tender moments like Page braiding Beckham’s hair and dramatic edits of their arguments. Throughout the season, their relationship faced numerous challenges: Page questioning Beckham’s intellectual capabilities after his Cheez-It sponsorship plans, their breakup and reconciliation, and Beckham’s brief fling with Daia during Casa Amor. Despite these obstacles, they managed to stay together and win the grand prize of $100,000, along with potential earnings from Beckham’s Cheez-It sponsorship if his followers came through.

“Surprisingly great outcome, as we hadn’t expected to make it this far. Beckham commented, “I believed it would be between JaNa and Kenny or Kendall and Nicole.” Even when it came down to the last two contestants, I assumed “it had to be Leah and Miguel”. We didn’t realize what the outside viewers thought of us, but in retrospect, it was an excellent performance.”

As a Black woman who has grown up watching Love Island and rooting for representation, I can’t express enough how significant Kordell and Raven’s win is to me. Their victory marks a long-overdue shift in the conversation around diversity and inclusion in this popular reality show.

Serena Page: This fills me with joy. As someone who strongly identifies with the Black community, this recognition holds significant value for me. A big shout-out to those who have supported and believed in us.

After getting our phones back, I’ve been feeling pleasantly overwhelmed by the response I’ve seen to my story online.

In my experience on the show, it wasn’t until we reached the final four that we began to sense how the audience felt about us. Given our atypical journey and the bumps we encountered along the way, I wondered if maybe viewers had grown tired of us.

As a cinephile, I couldn’t help but root for JaNa and Kenny. Their connection was palpable, and it seemed like they were experiencing something genuine. Kendall and Nicole also had a compelling love story going on. Even Aaron and Kaylor, being a couple, were strong contenders in my eyes. So, I was taken aback when another couple emerged as the favorites.

Did you both find it surprising that they didn’t connect?
S.P.: Not really. I sensed that Aaron wasn’t completely truthful about his Casa experience, and I knew that dishonesty wouldn’t sit well with America. Despite my deep affection for Aaron, I believe it was this deception that turned America off.

He seemed oblivious to the fact that he was being watched by people at home and by cameras. Isn’t it easy to slip up and forget about their presence, though?
K.B.: By the second day, I had already forgotten about the cameras surrounding us. There are instances when you become aware of them and think, Oh no, there’s a camera right over here, but usually, I managed to disregard their presence entirely.

Kordell, it seemed you overlooked the fact that winning Love Island came with a reward. This detail didn’t register for me until Ariana mentioned, “It’s time to announce the victors of this season’s Love Island,” and my response was something like, “Whoa, I hadn’t realized that!” I became so engrossed in the competition.

S.P.: But that’s how he is.

K.B.: I can be in my own world a lot.

Based on K.B.’s own words, I believe that his experience on Love Island truly transformed him from a boy into a man. He acknowledged that he came into the show with a mature mindset but still learned and grew in ways he didn’t expect. It’s fascinating to see how reality TV can have such an impact on people’s lives, allowing them to discover new aspects of themselves and helping them develop into more confident and self-aware individuals. K.B.’s story is a reminder that personal growth doesn’t always come from traditional means but can also occur through unique experiences like being on a popular reality show.

In the midst of many conversations, I found myself wondering why there was such a buzz around avocado toast. Frankly, it’s not my cup of tea, but since Serena enjoys it, I decided to give it a try. To my surprise, it turned out to be quite delicious. However, I couldn’t help but ponder if this was a trend among Love Island contestants or if people everywhere were simply avid fans of avocado toast. The mystery remains unsolved for me.

“Making this for breakfast is quite convenient since we have to begin our day. Preparing an extravagant spread every morning isn’t feasible for most of us.”

Every day, I’d prepare a hearty breakfast for Serena, even when things weren’t going well between us. It wasn’t uncommon to whip up some eggs, bacon, pancakes, or French toast.

As someone who has worn glasses since a young age, I can relate to Kordell’s struggle with getting new prescription lenses in a timely manner. I understand the frustration of having outdated glasses that don’t provide clear vision, but feeling self-conscious about wearing them due to broken frames or missing parts. The added pressure of having a public appearance only intensifies this issue. It takes courage to step into the spotlight with less than perfect vision and make light of the situation as Kordell did with his jokes about being blind. His honesty about the situation adds an endearing layer to his personality, making me appreciate his authenticity even more.

What’s the timeframe from receiving the call that you’ve been offered a role to catching a flight for rehearsals? This duration may vary between individuals, ranging anywhere from several weeks to just a few days. However, there is usually enough notice given to allow some level of preparation beforehand.

“It was often said, ‘You might be called upon at any moment, so take care of any necessary tasks beforehand.'”

Have you two discussed your plans for the future? Will you be maintaining a long-distance relationship? Is one of you relocating?
S.P.: Yes, we did talk about it while we were in the villa. I’ve lived in L.A. for a year now and have managed to convince him to join me there, so expect to see more of us in the future.

K.B.: For years, I’ve been planning to leave Texas. My top choices were between Arizona, Miami, and Las Vegas. Los Angeles hadn’t crossed my mind before, but after meeting her, it has become a possibility.

Your love story had its ups and downs, and that’s not even addressing the pressures that come from getting together on a reality-TV show. How do you make sure things like what happened with Kordell in Casa don’t keep popping up to haunt your relationship?
K.B.: Everything that happened just made us stronger. We don’t really think about the past. We actually joke around on it. It’s become something we both can laugh at and enjoy and be like, “Hey, that happened, but look at us now.”

We found out during the finale that there’s a Love Island USA reunion coming up on August 19. Do you have any questions for the others yet?
S.P.: We just got our phones. I haven’t even had time to catch up. Maybe once I do a deep dive into social media, I’ll have questions. But right now, we’re just having a blast.
