‘Bridgerton’ Season 4 to Center on Benedict Bridgerton’s Love Story With ‘Lady in Silver’ Sophie

As a dedicated cinephile with a deep appreciation for period dramas and romantic stories, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard that Netflix’s “Bridgerton” will be focusing on Benedict Bridgerton’s (Luke Thompson) love story in Season 4. This news brought back memories of my first encounter with the charming and enigmatic character in the earlier seasons, where he was portrayed as a free-spirited and open-minded bachelor, always ready for new experiences.

Announced officially: The fourth season of “Bridgerton” on Netflix will center around the romantic tale of perennially unattached Benedict Bridgerton.

In the upcoming Bridgerton season, Benedict, played by Luke Thompson, will take center stage as he embarks on a quest to find true love. Based on Julia Quinn’s third novel, “An Offer From a Gentleman,” this storyline follows Benedict’s encounter with a woman in silver at a masked ball, who is later revealed to be Sophie Beckett, of humble origins.

In the “Bridgerton” Season 4 preview, Netflix revealed that Benedict’s romantic interest remains the same: “Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson), the unconventional second son from ‘Bridgerton’s’ third season, refuses to be tied down despite his brothers’ marital bliss. However, his perspective changes when he encounters an alluring woman at his mother’s masquerade ball, referred to as a Lady in Silver.”

During a conversation between EbMaster and “Bridgerton” showrunner Jess Brownell in June, she hinted that Benedict Bridgerton would be the main character for Season 4. She also explained why his pansexuality was introduced in the third season, during Colin (Luke Newton) and Penelope’s (Nicola Coughlan) storyline. This plot change, based on “Romancing Mister Bridgerton,” the fourth book in the series, replaced Benedict’s original storyline for the TV show.

Brownell expressed that there were clues suggesting Benedict could be LGBTQ+, which aligned with her personal beliefs about him. He appeared open-minded and unconstrained by gender norms, hinting at fluidity and pansexuality. Benedict seemed drawn to people’s spirits rather than their genders. Therefore, we aimed to explore these aspects of his character in Seasons 1 and 2.

In the final episodes of “Bridgerton” Season 3, Benedict shares an unconventional experience with both Lady Tilley Arnold (Hannah New) and her companion Paul (Lucas Aurelio), at Tilley’s suggestion to broaden their horizons. However, once Tilley decides she prefers their previous monogamous arrangement and no longer wishes to share Benedict, he amicably ends the relationship, unwilling to commit further following this new self-discovery, as the season comes to a close.

“Benedict has always had a wandering spirit – some might say he’s been aimlessly drifting through life. But now, he’s on a mission to discover a deeper sense of purpose within himself.” (Thompson revealed that Benedict will be the lead character in “Bridgerton” Season 4.)

After playing a supporting role as Benedict on “Bridgerton” for three consecutive seasons, Newton is now set to take the lead role in Shonda Rhimes’ period drama series. Previously, the focus was on his on-screen siblings and their romantic partners: Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page), Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley), and Colin and Penelope.

There are still several “Bridgerton” siblings left in the series, including Eloise, Francesca, Gregory, and Hyacinth. The creators, Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers, aim to adapt all eight books, but Netflix has only confirmed renewals up to Season 4 at this time.
