As a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings films, I can only imagine the excitement Elijah Wood and Viggo Mortensen must feel at the prospect of returning to Middle-earth for more adventures. Having grown up with these stories and watching the films come to life on the big screen was an unforgettable experience for me, and I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and longing whenever I hear news about potential new installments.
Elijah Wood and Viggo Mortensen, who acted in The Lord of the Rings movies, have discussed the prospect of creating more films based on the story and shared their thoughts on potentially reprising their roles.
In an interview with JoBlo, actor Elijah Wood, famous for portraying Frodo in Peter Jackson’s acclaimed film series, expressed his excitement about the possibility of creating more movies in New Zealand alongside the masterminds behind the project – Jackson, Walsh, and Boyens. He shared, “It would be truly remarkable for me to revisit a realm that holds such significance and meaning to me. Absolutely, it would be fantastic.”
Regarding Mortensen, the actor who portrayed Aragorn, he shared with The Toronto Sun that he became aware of the potential next film, referred to as The Hunt for Gollum, only when reporters sought his input. He expressed that the crew appears determined to produce the movie, but he’s uncertain about their methods and goals. Mortensen expressed eagerness to engage in discussions with the filmmakers, but it’s premature to speculate if Mortensen would reprise his role as Aragorn.
He found it deeply engaging to be immersed in J.R.R. Tolkien’s literary world and the sources of inspiration behind his tales. The blend of Celtic and Nordic mythologies, as well as history, resonated strongly with him. If given the opportunity to rejoin such a project, he would be thrilled; however, he has little to share about it at present.
As a huge fan, I can tell you that Mortensen opened up about how taking on the iconic roles in The Lord of the Rings trilogy significantly impacted his career. He explained that these movies paved the way for him to secure other high-profile projects, such as starring as the leading man in A History of Violence under the skilled direction of David Cronenberg. However, it’s essential to note that Mortensen’s aspirations and artistic intentions as an actor didn’t shift because of the tremendous success he experienced from the fantasy films.
He explained that while some individuals are driven by the desire to amass wealth and fame, this wasn’t his primary motivation. His aspirations remained constant since his involvement in “Lord of the Rings.” Before that experience, he sought to be a part of significant stories that would leave a lasting impact.
Title “The Hunt for Gollum,” currently under production, will be helmed by experienced “Lord of the Rings” filmmaker Andy Serkis, known for his portrayal of Gollum in the earlier adaptations. The movie is projected to hit theaters in 2026. Based on the title, it seems that the story could revolve around Gandalf sending Aragorn on a mission to track down and apprehend Gollum before he reveals crucial information to Sauron’s army.
Ians McKellen, known for his portrayal of Gandalf in both The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit series, has expressed his readiness to reprise the role should he not have passed away by then.
