„Screencap This and Shame Me if I Ever Violate This Oath.” Stardew Valley Dev Vows Never to Make Players Pay for DLC or Updates

As a gamer who has been following Stardew Valley since its early days, I can’t help but be impressed by Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone’s dedication to his game. His recent promise not to ask for money for DLC or updates might seem unnecessary to some, but as someone who has seen developers ask for more and more from their fanbase time and again, it’s refreshing to see a developer hold firm to their word.

Eric Barone, the creator of Stardew Valley, assures us sincerely, with the integrity of his family on the line, that there will be no requests for payment for DLC or game updates in the future. He made this commitment in a post on X. Additionally, he encouraged fans to save screenshots of his statement as a reminder, and should he go back on his word, they could use these screenshots to hold him accountable.

In reality, an oath isn’t needed here as Barone recently rolled out an update primarily intended for modifications by modders.

In the meantime, Stardew Valley’s 1.6 update surprised fans with an abundance of fresh features. Some viewers considered it more like an expansive add-on than a routine fix, given its extensive list of improvements. The creator continued to roll out even more innovations in the supposedly minor patches that followed.

Barone responded to a comment on the post, letting people know that he was putting in a lot of effort to bring out update 1.6 for consoles and mobile devices. However, he didn’t have a definite date to share yet. A fan expressed gratitude towards the developer for his commitment, adding that the free add-ons made the wait worth it for the console-mobile update release.

A number of devoted fans have indicated their readiness to invest in larger content offerings. However, it appears they have previously made this contribution by purchasing “Stardew Valley” for use on various devices (progression synchronization is limited to PC and mobile versions). In a sense, this can be seen as a gesture of appreciation for the continuous updates provided to the game over the past eight years, despite ConcernedApe’s earlier statements that development had come to an end.
