George Clooney Praises Joe Biden Dropping Out After Urging Him to End His Campaign: ‘He Is Saving Democracy’ and Showing ‘True Leadership’

As a long-time supporter and friend of Joe Biden, I have witnessed his leadership and dedication to public service over many years. From his time as a senator to his tenure as vice president and now as president, Biden has always shown courage and integrity. However, after observing his performance in the 2024 presidential debate and subsequent interviews, it became clear to me that he was no longer able to effectively carry out the responsibilities of the presidency.

George Clooney, a renowned actor with an Oscar under his belt, recently expressed appreciation for Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race against Donald Trump. In an op-ed published in The New York Times on July 10, Clooney had urged Biden to end his campaign due to his disappointing performance at the first debate. Now, Clooney believes Biden’s exit is a significant contribution to preserving democracy.

“George Clooney expressed his admiration for President Biden’s exemplary leadership skills to CNN. Through his actions, Biden is preserving democracy yet again. We’re eager to lend our assistance to Vice President Harris as she embarks on this groundbreaking journey,” is one way to paraphrase the original statement.

A few weeks after co-hosting a record-breaking Hollywood fundraiser for Biden, which brought in $28 million, Clooney penned an op-ed suggesting Biden should withdraw from the presidential race.

“I have always admired Joe Biden – as a senator, as Vice President, and now as President. I consider him a friend and I trust his integrity and values. Over the past four years, he’s prevailed in numerous challenges. However, there’s one battle he can’t win: aging. None of us can. It’s heartbreaking to admit, but the Joe Biden I met three weeks ago at the fundraiser was not the assertive Biden of 2010 or even the Biden of 2020. He appeared differently, and it showed during the debate.”

Clooney expressed concern that Democrats have been overly fearful of a second Trump term, leading them to disregard concerns about Biden’s advanced age. His post-debate interview with ABC News and George Stephanopoulos further solidified his belief that Biden should not be the Democratic nominee.

Based on my extensive interactions with politicians from various levels of government, I firmly believe that the current political landscape is not in our favor come November. This conviction isn’t just a personal perspective, but a shared sentiment among senators, congress members, and governors I have spoken to privately.

George Clooney was among several well-known Hollywood figures who expressed their opposition to Biden securing the Democratic nomination. Rob Reiner, Stephen King, and Michael Moore were some of them. In an episode of his podcast “Rumble,” Michael Moore strongly criticized Biden’s debate performance, labeling it as “the most heartless form of elder abuse I have ever been compelled to witness.”
