Zooey Deschanel Remembers ‘Elf’ Co-Star Bob Newhart as ‘So Funny, But Not Wrapped Up in Himself’

As a movie buff with a soft spot for heartwarming tales and children’s stories that ignite the imagination, I was deeply moved by Zooey Deschanel‘s heartfelt words about the late Bob Newhart during the “Harold and the Purple Crayon” premiere. It brought back memories of my own experiences working with kind and generous actors who have left an indelible impact on me.

Zooey Deschanel recalls Bob Newhart as a caring and benevolent person during their collaboration on “Elf” (released in 2003). Sadly, Newhart passed away on July 18th, and they acted alongside Will Ferrell and James Caan in this holiday classic.

Deschanel expressed to EbMaster during the purple carpet event for “Harold and the Purple Crayon’s” premiere at The Culver Theater in Culver City that the finest actors are genuinely kind-hearted individuals. He was a remarkable man, not only humorous but also unassumingly so. His generosity extended beyond himself, making him an absolute joy to collaborate with.

Ferrell stated more recently that Caan didn’t find his portrayal of Buddy the Elf amusing during filming, but only appreciated it after seeing the movie’s finished version and labeled Ferrell as “not funny.” On the other hand, Deschanel mentioned she likely wasn’t present for that particular scene since they rarely worked together on set at the same time.

In a new take on “Harold and the Purple Crayon,” Zachary Levi portrays Harold, joined by Deschanel, Lil Rel Howery as Moose, Benjamin Bottani, and Tanya Reynolds as Porcupine. This production combines live-action and animation. When the story’s narrator, Harold’s creator, stops guiding him in his animated existence, Harold embarks on a real-world adventure with friends Moose and Porcupine to find him.

The movie is adapted from the 1955 children’s book with the same title by Crockett Johnson. Carlos Saldanha, known for creating “Rio” and directing “Ice Age,” is in charge of its direction. The screenplay for this live-action production was written by David Guion and Michael Handelman.

Levi, the actor from “Shazam!”, shared that he hadn’t read the comic book as a child but was still drawn to the project after reading the script. This was because he believed it would be an enjoyable film for his nephews to watch.

“The script I initially read was incredibly intelligent and amusing. I was deeply drawn to it because of its inspiring potential. When I mentioned working on this film to others, I was surprised by how many responded with, ‘That was my beloved book from childhood!'”

Saldanha became interested in the project following his bedtime story sessions with his kids, during which they read the creative and animated children’s book together, piquing his curiosity.

In his first live-action directorial project, Saldanha found ease with the blend of animation and CGI techniques. He shared that collaborating with the visual effects supervisor sparked an unbridled creativity as they brainstormed innovative ways to bring the crayon sketches from the family film to life.

“In today’s world, reality can sometimes stifle our creative minds,” Saldanha remarked. “The idea of a humble crayon having the power to transform your life is charming to me. It’s important to hold onto our imagination and creativity as we grow older.”

“Harold and the Purple Crayon” is in theaters Aug. 2.
