She had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015 which later spread to her brain in 2023. Her friends and colleagues mourned the loss of one of the defining women of the ’90s. Holly Marie Combs, Doherty’s co-star and longtime friend from Charmed, expressed her deep sadness on Instagram, calling Doherty her “most ardent champion,” “loyal protector,” and “best friend.” She continued by saying that Doherty had taught her the meaning of family and was forevermore her sister. Sarah Michelle Gellar, another close friend, wrote, “The pain is so great because there was so much love.”
I had the privilege of knowing Shannen Doherty not only as a talented actress but also as a fierce and passionate woman. Her director, Doherty’s own words, referred to her as an “American icon” even before the internet age.
