The Real Housewives of Dubai Recap: Girlboss, Gaslight, Gatekeep

As a longtime fan of this reality show, I’ve grown accustomed to the complexities and intricacies of the cast members’ lives. This week’s episode, however, really took me by surprise. Sarah, the newcomer, seems like a strong and determined woman, but her son’s eagerness for a new father figure tugged at my heartstrings. I can only imagine the pain he must feel after being exposed to so many bad male role models.

The Dubai Housewives universe presents numerous puzzling aspects – the presence of live-in staff who blend into the background like decor, the focus on having children, and the confusing dress codes for group events. However, what makes this franchise truly captivating is its portrayal of exaggerated versions of ordinary occurrences. It takes familiar activities, adds a dash of gold dust and class exploitation, and serves them up as if they’re typical experiences for wealthy individuals. For instance, have you ever wondered how difficult it can be to move into an unfinished home? Caroline Stanbury can give you a glimpse into that world, where Ikea furniture is replaced with custom 18-year-old bonsai trees and one-of-a-kind marble TV stands. Or perhaps you’re curious about how easy it is to get along with in-laws when money is no object? Stanbury can demonstrate just how far she’ll go to avoid them, including participating in a high-stakes desert car race. Even her apparent disinterest in raising a child in her age-gap marriage is intriguing, as it’s sure to lead to disaster. The Dubai Housewives universe offers a bizarre yet enticing mix of mundane housewife antics amplified to the extreme, along with a dash of religious, cultural, and social exoticism.

Occasionally, this situation resonates deeply. For instance, consider Taleen’s predicament. She portrays a contented existence, yet beneath her accomplished facade, she grapples with the gendered roles tied to cishetero marriage. Her struggle is evident, even with all the success, assistance, and backing from her family and in-laws. Taleen, who once dreamt of a fulfilling life as a singer, now feels lost and disconnected after investing a decade into her marriage, endeavoring to rebuild her fitness career. However, amidst her visible distress and newfound comfort in her life and self, she encounters persistent pressure from her husband and family: the expectation of producing a male heir to expand their family business, which entails constructing skyscrapers and other ostentatious, exploitative projects in the Emirates. Many can identify with Taleen’s inner turmoil, having committed to partnerships that left them feeling diminished as individuals. However, few face this challenge while enjoying the added luxuries of live-in nannies and chefs.

I’ve noticed that Sarah finds herself facing similar challenges and constraints when it comes to her romantic life, albeit in a different context. Although she publicly promotes self-help messages, she remains preoccupied with mending past relationship scars by seeking new successful partnerships. I can’t help but admire her new German Muslim boyfriend, with his impressive physique and charming demeanor. Yet, despite my approval of their budding relationship, Sarah feels the pressure to adhere to certain cultural expectations and performances. She openly appreciates his physical attributes but keeps their romantic involvement private, both for her social circle and the public eye.

In the interim, Brooks keeps quiet about any romantic advances. The relentless demands of being a full-time CEO, with the added help at home, are becoming apparent. For the past six months, she has dedicated herself to launching her business successfully, and the strain is showing not just to her but also to those close to her. She’s lost weight, grown more irritable, and her emotions flare up easily with a little alcohol. These pressures have not only affected her role as a mother but also hindered her performance on the reality show. Once known for her cunning maneuvers, she now seems careless and unclear in her actions. It took eight episodes before it was clear that she was causing unnecessary conflict within the group, but now, just one phone call from Taleen has revealed that she had been misled about her relationships with other women by someone she trusted, leading to hostile consequences.

According to the tale, when Brooks spoke with Taleen, she claimed that Stanbury had told Lesa she didn’t like Taleen following their interaction at the Queens’ dinner. To verify this, Taleen contacted Caroline and Lesa. It became clear to Taleen that Brooks wasn’t simply paraphrasing but rather sharing her own interpretations of the situation’s underlying meaning. In a private conversation with Brooks, Taleen tried to address her mistake, but instead of working towards reconciliation, Brooks forcefully reprimanded her and ended the meeting. Unfortunately, this is an example of the game of telephone getting distorted, with Brooks unwilling to acknowledge her part in the misunderstanding.

During Caroline’s desert getaway to avoid Sergio’s parents, an unexpected and tense situation arises. This happens during Ramadan when some cast members are observing fasts. The discomfort between Caroline and her friend Brooks reaches a boiling point, leading to a heated argument in front of the entire group. While Brooks tries to act unbothered and indignant, Taleen confronts her about her actions. This situation creates great tension but highlights Brooks’s struggle with anxiety, causing her to feel overwhelmed and mistrustful. She tries to control every aspect she can, an impossible task that ultimately disappoints everyone through late-night phone calls. The cast is finding it challenging to adjust to this change in Brooks, making next week’s discussion of newcomers even more intriguing. See you then!

Golden Nuggets

I was excited about Lesa’s plans to expand her maternity wear line into a widely-loved brand for every woman. But now, I’ve heard she’s focusing on postpartum skin care instead. Don’t get me wrong, I fully support her in pursuing new opportunities, but I can’t help but wonder if this shift in direction might divert her attention from her initial goal.

Based on my observation from this week’s episodes, it seems that Sara is quite the mastermind when it comes to manipulating situations behind the scenes. In two distinct instances, she subtly set up her new love interest to be questioned by her friends, feigning innocence. Yet, I have a strong hunch that her deceitful schemes will come to fruition as the season unfolds, unless there is an unexpected spiritual awakening within the group. Given my past experience with complex characters in dramas, I am intrigued and eager to see how Sara’s manipulations unfold and the consequences they bring about.

In a different take on this recap, I could explore Yasmine’s eldest daughter’s role in shaping Yasmine’s self-image and victimhood within their troubled family history. However, I plan to delve deeper into the psychological aspects of their relationship later in the series.
