Warframe Boss Bemoans Live-Service Games Getting Axed "Too Soon"

As a long-time fan of Warframe and digital RPGs in general, I couldn’t agree more with Digital Extremes CEO Steve Sinclair’s perspective on giving live-service games a chance to succeed. Having witnessed the untimely demise of several promising titles in recent years, it’s disheartening to see their potential go to waste due to unrealistic expectations and financial pressures.

According to Steve Sinclair, CEO of Digital Extremes, it’s important not to make the release of a live-service game the only focus. He advocates for more restraint from companies and allowing these games time to thrive.

In an interview with VGC, Sinclair expressed disappointment over how live-service games with significant potential are sometimes cancelled prematurely. He went on to say: “People believe the launch is a make-or-break moment, but it’s not. They have the financial means to be patient and they rarely use it. The game comes out, underperforms, and they abandon it.”

Over the past year, it appears that there has been a surge in live-service games being released. For instance, Knockout City was one of several titles that unfortunately had to shut down last June, joining the ranks of Rumbleverse, CrossfireX, and Anthem. Even Digital Extremes, which had previously published Wayfinder, closed its publishing division last year, returning control back to developer Airship Syndicate. Initially, Wayfinder was intended to be an online role-playing game with the support of Digital Extremes.

Over the past weekend, I was thrilled to be part of TennoCon 2024 as a dedicated gamer. Digital Extremes took center stage, unveiling an exciting new gameplay trailer for Warframe: 1999. In this upcoming adventure, players get ready to face off against a ’90s boy band! The action was just the beginning; they also treated us to a captivating one-hour livestream of Soulframe. But here’s what truly stole the show – Digital Extremes announced an incredible partnership with Make-A-Wish, granting a teenage fan an unforgettable opportunity to become a voice actor in Warframe: 1999! What an amazing experience for them!
