GRIERSON GROUNDBREAKERS

The Grierson Trust has revealed the contenders for the 2024 British Documentary Awards, in collaboration with All3Media. The BBC tops the list with 28 submissions, closely trailed by Channel 4 with 23 entries, and Netflix with 17.

As a passionate film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that a fresh and exciting addition has been announced for the upcoming documentary competition: Best Popular Culture. In this new category, you’ll find intriguing entries exploring various aspects of our modern world. From unraveling the mysteries behind internet hoaxes, to diving deep into the captivating artistry of performance poetry, we’ll also delve into the juiciest celebrity scandals and take a nostalgic journey through the iconic pop culture icons of the ’80s. Get ready for an enlightening and entertaining exploration!

Fifteen documentaries produced by Mindhouse and BBC Studios received recognition, with five entries from each company. Among these, “Me and the Voice in My Head” earned placements in three different categories. Other documentaries were acknowledged in two categories, such as “20 Days in Mariupol,” “Bobi Wine: The People’s President,” “Milli Vanilli,” and “Wham.”

In this category for outstanding documentary presenters, you’ll find emerging talents like Ellie Simmonds, Joe Tracini, and Rose Ayling-Ellis making their mark in the genre.

Lorraine Heggessey, as the head of The Grierson Trust, commended the shortlisted entries for bringing “fresh narratives that stand out among the abundance of content.”

The awards ceremony is set for Nov. 6 at London’s Roundhouse.

MAKOTO MASTERCLASS

At the upcoming Sundance Film Festival Asia in Taiwan (Aug. 21-25), Makoto Tezuka, the son of the renowned Japanese manga creator Osamu Tezuka, will conduct a masterclass. His wife, Reiko Okano, a celebrated manga author known for her work “Onmyoji,” will be with him. In September, Makoto will go back to Taiwan to engage in the Taipei Film Academy’s series of lectures. With an extensive background in filmmaking that spans from acting to directing and storyboard art, Makoto Tezuka’s latest directorial project is “Tezuka’s Barbara,” released in 2019.
