Lights On Boards ‘When the Phone Rang,’ Debuts Trailer Ahead of Premiere at Locarno (EXCLUSIVE)

As a supporter of films that delve deep into the human experience and explore the complexities of memory and identity, I am deeply moved by the trailer for “When the Phone Rang.” The fact that this film is based on director Iva Radivojević’s personal experience of leaving her crisis-stricken homeland adds an extra layer of authenticity and emotional resonance.

The film “When the Phone Rang” has been acquired by Lights On for international distribution, and they have now unveiled a trailer (shown below) in preparation for its worldwide debut at the Locarno Film Festival on August 12th.

Iva Radivojević, who previously wrote and directed “Aleph” and “Evaporating Borders,” personally crafted this film’s script and direction. It is inspired by her own lived experiences of departing from war-torn Yugoslavia during the 1990s.

The movie explores the themes of memory and displacement by reenacting a pivotal phone conversation, as mentioned in the press release. For an eleven-year-old character named Lana, this phone call effectively wipes out her entire homeland, history, and sense of self.

In the narrative, phone calls serve as frequent triggers, prompting the protagonist to recall various past experiences. These recollections are woven together to construct a more comprehensive tale. Consequently, the movie is structured around eleven distinct incidents, each initiated by a ringing phone and concluded with preparations for travel.

Radivojević explained that, according to author Dubravka Ugrešić, memories resurface unexpectedly, disturbing the present. This phone call is an example of such a memory, accompanied by numerous others in a chaotic and jumbled fashion. The goal of this film is to provide a space for these memories while also allowing viewers to bear witness.

“When the Phone Rang” is produced by Andrijana Sofranić Šućur and Marija Stojnić for Set Sail Films in Serbia, and Radivojević for Ivaasks Films in the U.S., in association with Madeleine Molyneaux of Picture Palace Pictures in the U.S.

The film will take part in the Cineasti del Presenti segment at the Locarno Film Festival. This part is specifically for debut or early-career films that are daring, unyielding, exploratory, and show a deep fascination with cinema’s potential. (According to the festival description.)
