Warframe's Developer Partners With Make-A-Wish To Feature Child In Upcoming Expansion

As a dedicated gamer with a soft spot for heartwarming stories, I couldn’t help but be moved by the recent announcement of Digital Extremes’ partnership with Make-A-Wish and AbleGamers during TennoCon 2024. It’s not every day that we get to witness such an incredible collaboration between a game developer and charitable organizations.

At TennoCon 2024, the annual gathering hosted by Warframe creator Digital Extremes, there was a new charitable initiative. Instead of collaborating with one organization as in past events, they selected two deserving charities to team up with. One of these charities, AbleGamers, is based outside Canada, while Make-A-Wish was chosen as the local charity partner.

Through Make-A-Wish Foundation, Digital Extremes helped bring to life the dream of a 16-year-old boy named James, who longed to be a voice actor for one of their popular video games, Warframe. James, living with Spina Bifida, had grown fond of the game thanks to his elder brother’s involvement as a dedicated player, earning the nickname “Tenno.” It was during this discovery process that Digital Extremes learned about James’ wish. Voice actor Kevin Lim, who lends his voice to the Warframe character Bombastine, played a pivotal role in making this dream come true for James.

Megan Everett, the community manager, shared that she learned about a boy named James and his wish to be a voice actor in a video game through her involvement with Make-A-Wish Foundation. Subsequently, she proposed the opportunity for James to audition as a voice actor for Warframe, having recently contributed to its Duviri Paradox expansion.

“After being contacted by Kevin Lim, we initiated communication with Make-A-Wish to explore the possibility of James joining Warframe. His enthusiasm for this opportunity was evident. Subsequently, we carried on discussions with James, his family, and Make-A-Wish. Corey [Van Den Hoogenband] and Veronica [Botnick], who have spearheaded our charity outreach efforts for many years and have a close relationship with Make-A-Wish, played a pivotal role in this collaboration. They even facilitated the creation of James’ character in the game for his personal arcade cabinet and arranged for his family to visit London.”

James and his family recently relocated to London for James’ involvement in the Warframe 1999 expansion project at Digital Extremes’ studio. Each day, his mother has updated me with excitement that James had an exceptional day at rehearsals, according to Kevin Lim. Lim also mentioned that if online rehearsals were already impressive, then TennoLive is certain to be even more remarkable.

In the upcoming expansion of Warframe 1999, which is set to be released this winter, James and his character will become accessible in the arcade cabinet mode. This means that players can enjoy interacting with them directly while they continue playing the game.
