Honestly, when I first came across Mewgenics, I didn’t realize how much there was to it! But if you’ve ever played a game by Edmund McMillen – like, anything he’s made – you know his games always look simple, but they’re actually incredibly complex and rewarding. It’s that same kind of thing!
Okay, so Act 1 felt pretty huge, right? Well, get ready, because this game has three full acts! And it’s not just length – there are tons of secret bosses and hidden areas to discover. Honestly, the systems are incredibly deep, and you can really lose yourself trying to master everything. If you’re the type of gamer who loves to sink hours into perfecting a game and exploring every nook and cranny, Mewgenics is seriously made for you.
Let’s explore the design choices and features that keep this quirky, cat-themed game fun to play over and over again!
10. Levelling NPCs to Max
I Will Buy Their Respect with Cats!

It might sound simple, but this task will actually take a significant amount of time – likely dozens, and possibly even hundreds, of hours.
The game immediately shows you that the people in Boon County each have levels that can be increased. It’s easy to get them to their first level, demonstrating how helpful leveling up can be. But after that initial boost, raising their levels becomes much harder and takes a lot longer.
Achieving a completely upgraded house with maximum storage and a clear understanding of the breeding process will require a significant time commitment and a large number of cats. Start breeding to make progress!
9. Rare Special Events
It’s Been 84 Years…
Have you ever repeated something you’ve done many times, only to suddenly discover a new detail or event? If you succeed at the necessary challenge, that discovery can then lead to a chain of further surprises.
Mewgenics features uncommon and impactful events that are only accessible to cats with exceptional abilities.
Consider the tomb you find in the Desert. Navigating it involves a series of skill checks: succeed and you advance, fail and you’re set back. If you can complete all the challenges, you’ll earn a large reward, but it’s a gamble. These kinds of unpredictable events make each playthrough unique. You never know what surprises await, even after hundreds of runs!
8. Completing Every Side Quest
No, I Don’t Want to Kill My Teammates! Oh, 200 coins? Sure, Why Not?
Although finishing the core Mewgenics missions seems like the primary goal, you’ll soon realize you’ll be revisiting those areas to complete a variety of strange and unusual challenges.
Once you unlock Dr. Beanies, he’ll give you special items to equip to your cats as part of side quests. He’ll ask you to take them to the third area of the current Act. It sounds simple, but there’s a catch: equipping these items will actually give your cats negative effects!
Imagine scenarios like poisoning everything on the board, being forced to eliminate your own teammates, or even having to hide details about your pet cat! These challenges completely shake up your usual gameplay, making things much harder, but they also come with a rewarding payout of 200 coins.
7. Becoming a Hoarder
Become the Crazy Cat Lady You Were Born to Be!
It’s something most gamers experience – getting really into a weird, specific goal. Lately, I’ve been obsessed with filling a room with so much furniture that it looks chaotic, but hey, at least my cats seem to enjoy it!
Mewgenics lets you fill your place with tons of furniture, either by buying it from Baby Jack or finding boxes while exploring. But there’s also rare furniture hidden throughout the game! Can you collect every single piece? It’s a mystery!
I eventually want to fully upgrade all my house stats, but right now I’m happy just collecting items and repeatedly playing the challenging Act 1 Hard route to get the furniture I want.
6. A Room for Every Occasion
A Cosy-Home Sim? In My Cat Breeding Game? Preposterous!
Once you’ve expanded your house to its full potential with all available rooms, the next logical step is to decorate each room individually to create specialized areas.
Want a dedicated space to create uniquely mutated cats? Absolutely! Or maybe a room just for your strongest, most capable kitties? Why not! And of course, you can also have a room designed to display beautiful furniture and attract the best stray cats.
Keeping your cats separated and carefully managing their breeding will be key to improving their qualities. Inbreeding can cause health problems over time, so it’s important to have separate spaces for different breeding purposes.
5. Extra Difficulty Modes
You Thought that was Hard? You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet!
Have you talked to Steven yet? He’s a bit of a strange guy and will discourage you from reloading saves during your gameplay. He seems to notice everything you do, so be careful!
But when you reach Act 3, you’ll find Steven has a surprising ability: he can adjust how challenging the levels are and even restart battles to make them even harder.
Hard mode adds tougher versions of enemies to your runs, significantly increasing the challenge. Just when you’re getting comfortable, Mewgenics throws a new curveball! The better rewards make it worthwhile, though. And there’s even more – you can play on Crazy and Impossible difficulties! Mewgenics really wants to keep you hooked, and honestly, that’s great!
4. Discovering Every Secret Cat
Edmund McMillen… Breeding with my Cats? I Don’t Know How I Feel About That.
Ever noticed a strange cat wandering around your neighborhood? Maybe one that seems a little… different? That’s what I’m getting at!
It’s understandable if you’re surprised, as it doesn’t happen often. Every now and then, you come across unique cats that look and act quite differently from the norm.
You can find lots of unique cat types in the game, like ones that resemble characters from the Acts, cats inspired by Isaac, or even the infamous Sonichu (don’t worry if you haven’t heard of that one!). These different cats aren’t just for show – they can have powerful mutations. So, that’s another good reason to try and collect them all!
3. Completing Every Chapter with Every Cat
For When Time is but a Number
You’ve probably noticed those little achievement messages after finishing a chapter, like “You completed the Caves with a Fighter!” It’s cool, but when you think about it, there are 13 different classes to play, and three Acts with branching storylines. That means a lot of possible achievements!
It’s now clear: to fully complete Mewgenics, you need to finish every task with all types of cats. This even includes completing challenges against secret bosses like the Throbbing King.

If you can only process four at a time, you’ve definitely got a lot of work ahead of you! And that’s assuming everything goes smoothly – you don’t want to lose one halfway through. Getting all of these achievements could take a very long time, possibly years.
2. Collarless Cats
You Are on this Council, But We Do Not Grant You the Rank of Master
Okay, so I might have gotten the number of challenges wrong – it’s actually 14, not 13! I totally forgot to mention that one of them is super tough: you have to beat the entire game using a Collarless cat. It’s a real test of skill!
Just so you know, collarless cats aren’t as powerful as cats with specific classes. They don’t receive any stat boosts, and their skills are basic – usually much less effective than those of class-based cats.
Think of playing with a Collarless Cat as an extra layer of difficulty – on top of the game’s existing challenges! That’s what Mewgenics is all about: stacking challenges. It’s tough, but definitely possible – you just need to really focus and strategize!
1. Breeding the Perfect Cat
There is no Prize to Perfection… Only an End to Pursuit
What makes a ‘perfect’ cat really depends on what you’re looking for. Some people want a typical cat with well-rounded stats. Others might prefer a unique, powerfully-built feline, even if its appearance is unusual. And for some, the most important thing is simply a cat that’s adorable!
Everyone has their own idea of what ‘perfect’ looks like, and that’s what makes Mewgenics so engaging. You can focus on building your dream home and then training a powerful team of fighters, or you can experiment with unique ability combinations from different classes to create incredibly strong strategies. There are many ways to play, and it’s all up to you!
Mewgenics doesn’t limit you with strict rules. It offers a flexible world where you’re encouraged to experiment and explore. Not every attempt will be successful—some will be challenging, and others might fail completely—but you can always learn from your mistakes and start over with new subjects.
Mewgenics is a game you can play endlessly, offering incredible replay value – a truly unique quality.
