As a huge fan of disaster films and sequels that bring back beloved characters, I’m both thrilled and intrigued by the box office performance of “Twisters.” Having grown up watching the original “Twister” in the late 90s, I have fond memories of the edge-of-your-seat excitement and suspense it brought. So, seeing the new installment rake in impressive numbers at the domestic box office is a delight for me.
The movie “Twisters” is creating a big buzz at the box office, but it’s not quite striking a chord with audiences outside the country to the same extent.
The 1996 disaster film “Twister” had a successful follow-up titled “The Film,” which earned $27.1 million from 76 foreign countries over the weekend and a total of $42 million from overseas markets. However, its domestic box office collection was even more impressive, raking in an astonishing $80.5 million. In total, the movie has made $123.2 million worldwide since its release.
In countries outside of the U.S. and Canada, the top earning markets this past weekend were the United Kingdom with $5.5 million, Mexico bringing in $2.5 million, Australia contributing $2 million, and France generating $1.9 million. The film “Twisters” underperformed in China, raking in only $1.5 million during its debut. Imax screens added $2.2 million to the international earnings and $11.2 million to the global total for the weekend.
I’m an avid fan of movie productions and I was thrilled to learn that “Twisters” came with a hefty price tag of $155 million during its production, excluding the substantial marketing investments worldwide. Universal Pictures bravely took the lead in funding this project and released it for domestic viewing, while Warner Bros. boldly acquired the international distribution rights. It’s an exciting time as we eagerly await the movie’s debut in Japan and South Korea.
Led by filmmaker Lee Isaac Chung, who brought us “Minari,” the upcoming movie “Twisters” introduces Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, and Anthony Ramos as a fresh team of storm chasers. These brave individuals are thrust into a life-or-death situation when several tornadoes collide over central Oklahoma. The original “Twister,” released in 1996, starred Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Cary Elwes, and Philip Seymour Hoffman as storm scientists on a mission to tame the most formidable tornado in years. This film was an enormous success with almost $500 million in worldwide revenue, ranking as the second-highest grossing movie of 1996 and earning two Oscar nominations.
In other parts of the world, “Despicable Me 4” from Universal and Illumination brought in $52 million in 79 markets. This animated family film has earned a total of $315 million outside the US and $574 million globally. With the success of popular spin-offs like “Minions,” the franchise now holds the title of the first animated series to surpass $5 billion at the global box office.
In simple terms, Disney-Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” earned $34.2 million from 51 countries during the past weekend. After being on screens for six weeks, it has made a staggering $846.9 million outside the US and $1.443 billion globally. The sequel is projected to soon outperform “Frozen 2” ($1.45 billion) as the highest-grossing animated movie ever. Additionally, it’s close to surpassing “Barbie” ($1.446 billion) and ranking among the top 15 highest-earning films of all time.
