Republic Pictures Acquires Munich Massacre Drama ‘September 5,’ Starring Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, Ben Chaplin, Leonie Benesch (EXCLUSIVE)

As a dedicated cinephile with a deep appreciation for historical dramas, I am thrilled to learn about Paramount’s acquisition of the global sales rights (apart from Germany, Switzerland, and Austria) for “September 5.” The film’s connection to the Munich Summer Olympics and its star-studded cast, including Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, Ben Chaplin, and Leonie Benesch, is enough to pique my interest.

Republic Pictures, a division of Paramount, has secured the rights to sell “September 5” worldwide, excluding Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. This film, directed by Tim Fehlbaum, features Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, Ben Chaplin, and Leonie Benesch in leading roles. Leonie made a significant impact last year with her role in the Oscar-nominated “The Teachers’ Lounge.”

The film, featuring Sean Penn as a producer, is set to begin the Horizons Extra competition segment at the Venice Film Festival on August 29th.

During the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics on September 5, an American sports broadcasting team found themselves in a new role. Instead of just reporting on the sports, they switched to providing real-time coverage as tragedy struck: the Israeli athletes were taken hostage.

As a movie buff, I’d put it this way: “This film, titled ‘September 5,’ offers a fresh perspective on the historic live broadcast that captivated an estimated billion viewers around the world. It reveals the pivotal moment that revolutionized media coverage and shaped the way we consume live news to this very day.”

In the core of the tale is Geoff, a passionate and driven young producer eager to earn the approval of his boss, the esteemed TV magnate Roone Arledge. When unprepared, Geoff finds himself in the captain’s seat for the live broadcast, accompanied by Marianne, a skilled German interpreter.

In the midst of changing stories, ticking time, and conflicting hearsay, as the lives of hostages teeter on a precarious edge, Geoff faces difficult choices while questioning his own moral values. How do I report on such an incident when the perpetrators seek the very attention my coverage brings?

The writers are Moritz Binder and Fehlbaum. The producers are Philipp Trauer, Thomas Wöbke, Fehlbaum, Penn, John Ira Palmer and John Wildermuth.

September 5 was created as a collaborative effort between BerghausWöbke Filmproduktion and Projected Picture Works, with the support of Constantin Film and ERF Edgar Reitz Filmproduktion.

The film was shot on a sound stage and original locations in Munich last year.
