I love a good competitive game, but honestly, playing with friends is where it’s at. There’s just something awesome about everyone working towards the same goal in a co-op game, and when you finally win, it feels so much better! We’ve seen some recent hits like Split Fiction that everyone’s been talking about, but there are tons of other great co-op games out there just waiting to be discovered.
Whether you’re looking for a fun game the whole family can play together, or a terrifying experience that’s even scarier with a friend, there’s a co-op game for everyone. Despite their differences, these games are all immediately enjoyable.
Resident Evil Revelations 2 Is an Amazing Co-Op Horror Game
The Resident Evil series is known for its high quality, but traditionally focuses on solo play. Resident Evil 5 was the first game to let players team up, and a few installments have featured co-op since then. Resident Evil Revelations 2 is particularly memorable because it lets you play through the story switching between two different teams of characters.
The game features two teams: Claire Redfield with Moira Burton (Barry Burton’s daughter), and Barry Burton paired with a young girl named Natalia Korda who has special abilities. Players control each character and rely on their teammate to solve puzzles and progress. This cooperative gameplay is what sets this Resident Evil title apart from other games in the series.
Unravel Two Is a Great Puzzle-Platformer for Two Players
In Unravel Two, players each control one of two characters called Yarny. When playing with another person, each player manages a Yarny, and the two are connected by a yarn string. This string isn’t just for keeping the players close; it’s a key part of the game, influencing how you solve puzzles and progress.
While you can play Unravel Two by yourself, it’s much more fun with another person! The game relies on teamwork and talking to each other, as you’ll need to coordinate movements to swing and solve puzzles using the yarn. The beautiful world and tricky levels make it a co-op adventure well worth playing together.
The Overcooked! Series Is a Fun and Chaotic Cooking Experience
Both Overcooked! and Overcooked 2! are based around a fun idea: two players working together to cook and serve food. You earn points by completing orders, but it seems easy at first. However, Overcooked! quickly becomes chaotic as the game adds tricky obstacles while you’re still trying to prepare each dish correctly.
It’s hard to truly understand how challenging cooking can be until you’re trying to do it while moving between vehicles! Players will face frustrating obstacles like missing ingredients, dirty dishes, or even creatures stealing their food, forcing them to restart. Many recipes have multiple steps that need to be done in a specific order, which means good communication with teammates is essential.
Deep Rock Galactic Brings Mining and First-Person Shooting Together
In Deep Rock Galactic, you explore randomly created caves while completing different kinds of missions. These missions include things like mining for resources, collecting materials, fighting off creatures, and even guiding a robotic drill. The game also features several character classes, each offering a unique way to play.
The game’s classes work together seamlessly in co-op mode, making the experience much more enjoyable than playing alone. For instance, Drillers and Engineers can combine their skills to create new pathways, while Scouts can use grappling hooks and Engineer-built platforms to reach otherwise inaccessible areas. It’s a game that encourages teamwork while still letting each player express their unique style.
Sea of Thieves Delivers an Authentic Pirate Experience
Sea of Thieves lets you experience the thrill of being a pirate, offering both guided adventures and the freedom to explore a vast open world. You can hunt for treasure on mysterious islands, battle other players at sea, and even team up with Captain Jack Sparrow! The game is best enjoyed with a crew of up to four friends, but can also be played solo.
Playing as a crew on a ship is where Sea of Thieves truly comes alive. There’s a lot to do to keep a ship sailing smoothly, and it’s much easier with friends. One person can steer, while others manage cannons or fix damage. Unexpected events and battles are also more fun when you’re playing with a team.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge Is Classic Co-op Fun
Classic arcade games, especially older titles like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, were always best when played with a friend. Shredder’s Revenge keeps that tradition alive, offering a fun, cooperative story mode with a variety of characters to choose from. Each character has unique strengths and abilities, so everyone feels like a valuable part of the team.
This game offers simple, classic fun for up to six players. It’s perfect for relaxing and enjoying some cooperative action with family and friends. Many players will love the familiar feeling and pure enjoyment of battling through levels together.
Borderlands 2 Is the Best Game in the Series
Borderlands 2 is a fast-paced, first-person shooter where you collect a huge variety of guns and gear as you play. Many fans consider it the best game in the Borderlands series, though all of the games are great to play with friends. You can choose from several characters, called Vault Hunters, each with their own special skills and abilities.
As a huge fan, I have to say the humor in Borderlands 2 is just fantastic, and the whole campaign is really well done. But honestly, Handsome Jack is what really makes it special – he’s such a memorable villain! You can totally enjoy the game on your own, but it’s SO much better when you play with friends. There are endless combinations of guns and skills to try, and that’s what keeps us all coming back for more co-op adventures!
A Way Out Is a Prison Break Co-Op Game
Many games offer cooperative play, and some are more fun with friends. However, A Way Out by Hazelight Studios is unique because it genuinely requires two players to work together. You play as Leo and Vincent, two convicts attempting a prison escape and trying to stay free.
I’m really excited about this game because it’s all about teamwork! You absolutely have to play with others to get through everything, and each character brings something unique to the table. The best part? You only need one person to buy it – then a friend can join and play with you for free! It’s an incredibly moving story, and I can’t wait to experience it with someone.
Split Fiction Combines Sci-fi and Fantasy for an Awesome Experience
Split Fiction is a co-op game that blends the sci-fi and fantasy genres in a fresh way. Similar to games like A Way Out and It Takes Two, it’s designed for two players working together. You’ll play as either Mio or Zoe, two writers who find themselves inside the virtual worlds created from their stories. Each character offers a unique experience as you switch between different sci-fi and fantasy settings with their own special gameplay features.
The teamwork in this game is excellent, with each character having a unique job and the skills to do it well. For instance, Mio excels in close combat with an energy katana and can even manipulate gravity in certain areas, while Zoe specializes in long-range attacks using a gravity whip and can also move objects around. As you progress, the game becomes more complex and focuses on a compelling story centered around its characters.
It Takes Two Is the Ultimate Co-op Game
Hazelight’s game, It Takes Two, tells the story of Cody and May, a couple heading for divorce. The premise is clever: they’re magically turned into dolls and need to cooperate to overcome challenges and return to their human forms. This forces the constantly arguing couple to work together, which is central to the game’s narrative.
The game It Takes Two really emphasizes teamwork. Players have to cooperate and combine their unique skills to solve puzzles and get through each level. There’s even a moment where one player uses a hammer while the other uses a nail – highlighting that neither can succeed on their own. Together, though, they can conquer anything. This idea of needing each other extends beyond the game itself, becoming a powerful message about cooperation.
