Box Office: ‘Twisters’ Spinning Ahead of Forecasts With $32.2 Million Opening Day

As a seasoned movie buff with decades of experience under my belt, I’m thrilled to see “Twisters” making such a strong debut at the box office. The industry projections for this natural disaster thriller have been exceeded, and it’s now on track for one of the top five biggest domestic opening weekends of the year.

“Twisters” is spinning its way towards becoming one of the top five highest-grossing domestic movie debuts this year. The sequel generated an impressive earnings of $32.2 million on its opening day from 4,151 screens, surpassing initial predictions through regular showings and preview screenings.

The anticipated revenue for the first weekend of the natural disaster thriller has been revised upwards to $74 million, significantly surpassing earlier industry predictions of around $50-$55 million. This places it in contention with Universal’s “Despicable Me 4” ($75 million) for the fourth-largest opening weekend of the year. However, note that “Despicable Me 4” opened on a Wednesday and earned revenues over a five-day holiday weekend, whereas the thriller’s revenue is limited to the standard three-day weekend frame. The top three North American openings of the year so far are “Inside Out 2” ($154 million), “Dune: Part Two” ($82 million), and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($80 million).

It’s exciting for “Twisters,” a movie produced by Amblin and distributed internationally by Warner Bros., to have such esteemed company. The original “Twister” (starring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt) was a groundbreaking special effects film and financial success, ranking as the second-highest grossing feature of 1996. It has also remained popular on cable television. This new installment, helmed by Oscar-nominated director Lee Isaac Chung and featuring new characters portrayed by Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos, aims to recapture the success of its predecessor and validate its substantial $155 million production budget.

Starting strong with a high box office performance during the opening weekend is a promising sign for “Twisters” – but the real test comes next week when Disney releases Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine”. The movie has received positive reviews and audiences have shown great excitement (as indicated by Cinema Score’s “A-” grade). So, “Twisters” has a good chance of continuing its success.

I’m excited to share that Universal is right behind with “Despicable Me 4,” bringing in an estimated $23.8 million for its third weekend. With this success, Illumination’s animated gem is poised to surpass the $250 million mark domestically within the next 24 hours. As of now, it holds the third spot among the highest-grossing North American releases of the year. It’s a close race as “Dune: Part Two” currently leads with $282 million, but Universal is steadily closing the gap.

The current front-runner for the year is undeniably “Inside Out 2” from Disney and Pixar. With an impressive $3.7 million earned on Friday, it currently ranks third this week. After six weeks in theaters, “Inside Out 2” is set to surpass $590 million in domestic box office revenue today, bringing it even closer to the prestigious $600 million milestone, which only 14 films have previously achieved.

As a longtime film critic with a deep appreciation for the horror genre, I’ve seen my fair share of divisive films that struggle to find an audience despite their unique offerings. Neon’s “Longlegs,” which I had high hopes for due to its intriguing premise and bold visual style, is unfortunately one such film.

Completing the list of the top five earners is “A Quiet Place: Day One” from Paramount, estimated to bring in $5.9 million during its fourth week in North American theaters. By the end of this weekend, the alien invasion prequel is projected to have made a total of around $127 million domestically. Currently, it holds the eighth position among the highest-grossing domestic releases of 2023.
