As a movie and TV critic with over two decades of experience in the industry, I’ve seen the landscape shift dramatically over the years. The rise of streaming platforms has disrupted traditional television and film viewing habits, giving audiences an unprecedented amount of choice and convenience.
During the week of July 12-18 in the United States, the two most popular original shows on streaming services were “Love Island USA” Season 6 on Peacock and “Descendants: The Rise of Red” on Disney+. These shows captured the attention of viewers for a combined total of 1.1 billion minutes, making them the number one and two titles on Luminate’s TV and film charts.
The second week saw “Love Island” reigning at the top with a slight increase in viewership from the previous week’s 919 million minutes watched. This improvement came after the release of episodes 28 through 33. During this period, a new show called “The Rise of Red” premiered, allowing it to gather its entire week’s worth of viewership.
During the initial three-week period on Netflix, “Vikings: Valhalla” Season 3 was viewed for approximately 1 billion minutes, making it the second most-watched title. Meanwhile, “Receiver,” a docuseries, ranked third with around 886.5 million minutes watched. The fourth spot went to “The Boys” Season 4, which accumulated about 577.8 million minutes of viewing time within the first week of its penultimate episode’s release and the early hours of its finale.
I supported Peacock’s success this week with not one, but two hit titles on the charts. “Love Island” wasn’t the only thing drawing viewers in – “Those About to Die” took fifth place with an impressive 460.5 million minutes watched. Netflix also had a strong presence with Season 2 of “Another Self” debuting at number four, racking up 439 million minutes, and “Desperate Lies” holding steady in its second week with 426.9 million minutes. At the bottom of the chart, “The Bear,” “Presumed Innocent,” and “Sausage Party: Foodtopia” fought for position.
After watching “The Descendants,” I couldn’t help but notice the significant surge in popularity for “Hillbilly Elegy” on the movie charts. Released on Netflix in 2020, this film adaptation of JD Vance’s memoir captivated audiences, particularly when news broke out that Vance was named as former president Donald Trump’s running mate. Impressively, it ranked sixth with a total of 287.8 million minutes watched by fans like me.
As a film enthusiast, I’d put it this way: In the past week, I’ve spent an astonishing 987.1 million minutes enjoying Tyler Perry’s “Divorce in the Black.” It came in second place on the charts! Not far behind was “The Champion,” which debuted with a strong performance of its own, garnering 949.5 million minutes watched. New entries to the scene included “Blame the Game” and “My Spy: The Eternal City.” On the other hand, fan favorites like “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” “A Family Affair,” and “Space Cadet” continued their impressive runs on the charts.
