ABC News Taps ‘GMA’ Weekend Anchors to Expand Streaming Efforts (EXCLUSIVE)

As a long-time news enthusiast and former broadcast journalist, I’m always excited to see the evolution of television news and its intersection with digital media. With my background in traditional TV news and a deep appreciation for the changing landscape, I find ABC News‘ latest move to expand its weekend programming on ABC News Live particularly noteworthy.

Johnston, Norman, and Benitez play significant roles at ABC News, responsible for leading “Good Morning America,” the network’s premier morning show, into the competitive weekend news scene.

Now they each will take on another pressing task — boosting ABC News in the streaming wars.

On Saturdays and Sundays starting this weekend, ABC News Live under Disney’s journalism unit will broaden its weekend programming with each member of the trio handling live-streaming duties after 10 a.m. ET. They will continue with their roles on “GMA” weekends. Alongside them is DeMarco Morgan, co-anchor of “GMA3,” who currently anchors ABC News Live’s weekend morning shifts. The quartet will share responsibilities for the “ABC News Live Weekend” content.

“Seni Tienabeso, ABC News Live’s executive director, shares in an interview that our plan is to feature all of our top anchors on ABC News Live. This approach has been implemented already. We currently have our most-viewed anchors gracing our screens. For instance, David Muir has been hosting the 9 p.m. slot on ABC News Live during this week’s Republican National Convention coverage. Later, he transitions to his regular role when ABC News Live goes live on the ABC broadcast network at 10 p.m.”

The push into weekends is one of ABC News’ bigger digital maneuvers since being placed under the aegis of veteran Disney executive Debra OConnell, who was named in February to lead a combined unit of Disney’s local stations and national newsgathering operations.

Mainstream TV news outlets, including NBC News Now and CBS News 24/7, have started broadcasting streams. Most efforts have gone towards creating weekday schedules. For instance, NBC News Now has weekday programs hosted by Hallie Jackson, Tom Llamas, Savannah Sellers, and Joe Fryer. CBS News 24/7 offers an evening news program anchored by John Dickerson. However, not all weekend hours are consistently filled with live programming.

“Karin Gilford, Disney Entertainment’s senior vice president of digital media for News Group and Networks, shares that they are among the pioneers in extending weekend coverage so extensively. The objective is to introduce our elite talent into streaming services and engage audiences with more weekly hours.”

For a number of years, ABC News has broadcasted an evening program hosted by Linsey Davis via livestream. Lately, though, a significant portion of their streaming efforts appears to be dedicated to producing exclusive content for Hulu and other Disney platforms. At times, this content is created in collaboration with anchors such as George Stephanopoulos or Robin Roberts. The surge in this type of production could be due to the considerable success ABC News has experienced from two-hour “20/20” broadcasts that draw a large following among Hulu subscribers.

I, as an admirer of media trends, believe executives aim for viewers to view linear and streaming news interchangeably. Tienabeso highlights this point, adding that ABC News intends to leverage more linear program anchors and correspondents for their broadband initiatives over the long term.

On Saturdays and Sundays, “ABC News Live” will broadcast “GMA Life,” a weekly recap of the best lifestyle stories from “Good Morning America.” This segment includes unique celebrity coverage, special deals from our “Deals & Steals” segment, and intriguing author interviews about upcoming books.
