Box Office: Glen Powell’s ‘Twisters’ Makes $10.7 Million in Previews

As a long-time fan of disaster movies and the original “Twister” film from 1996, I’m beyond excited to finally witness the much-anticipated sequel, “Twisters,” hitting the big screens this summer. The nostalgia of watching Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton on the silver screen as they braved the treacherous tornadoes in Oklahoma still lingers in my memory, and I can’t wait to see how this new cast of storm chasers will fare against the deadliest tornado season yet.

“Twisters” is getting ready to shake up the summer box office.

A new disaster movie, which is a follow-up to the 1996 hit “Twister” by Universal Pictures, brought in $10.7 million during its Thursday evening previews at the box office. Featuring Glen Powell, Daisy Edgar-Jones, and Anthony Ramos in leading roles as storm chasers, this film is projected to earn between $50 million and $55 million when it officially opens over the weekend.

The film “Twisters” carries a production cost of $155 million. To make back this investment, it must generate significant revenue at the global box office. Warner Bros. is handling its international distribution, where it has earned approximately X million dollars to date. This weekend, it will debut in major markets such as France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom.

Twenty-eight years after the initial release, the movie “Twisters” introduces Powell as Tyler Owens, a well-known storm chaser online, and Edgar-Jones portrays Kate Cooper, a meteorologist who used to chase tornados but is still traumatized by a destructive storm from her past. Alongside her coworker Javi (Ramos), Kate confronts Tyler in the midst of one of Oklahoma’s deadliest tornado seasons.

In addition to Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, Harry Hadden-Paton, Sasha Lane, Daryl McCormack, Nik Dodani, David Corenswet, Tunde Adebimpe, Katy O’Brian, and Paul Scheer, the film boasts the presence of actors like Lee Isaac Chung, who helmed “Minari,” and James Paxton, the son of Bill Paxton from the original “Twister.”

Following its release in 1996, “Twister” became the second biggest box office hit of the year for Warner Bros., surpassing their previous record-breaking film. The movie featured an impressive cast including Paxton, Helen Hunt, Cary Elwes, Jami Gertz, Alan Ruck, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Lois Smith and Todd Field, who portrayed storm chasers in Oklahoma.
